7110.65 question
Posted: 04-04-2009, 04:53 PM

Hey guys!

Im a CTI student. Hopefully graduating next may if schedule permits. After going to the Denver Center for the second time to plug in with a buddy whos dad is a controller I got a copy of the 7110.65. What a beautiful sight! Something that would actually help me in my career! lol. So, end of story.

My question is while your in OKC do we go over the entire 7110.65? Or some? If some, which parts?

Its exciting to have some text that actually is exactly what i need to be an Air Traffic Controller. Rather than going over all the basic crapt that seems to get us no where.

Anyways, thanks guys for any help!

while the .65 is our bible it is also very much up to interpretation. The academy does a good job of going through it with the most recent information and updates. Good luck reading the entire thing, it is pretty dry. While yes it does have info very pertinent to ATC it reads like a legalese dictionary type document.

jesus christ! you will end up reading it anyway mostly at school. I have never seen anybody whom wanted the read the .65. During my tour and ATC school I used flash cards and other cheats to learn the thing for testing, THE only time we ever read the thing was in class - and to prove somebody wrong.

if you end up going to a center you will NOT need to know the entire book. in fact, no matter which type facility you go to, you will NOT need to know the entire book

Center - chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and maybe a few others, but mostly those.
Tower - chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and maybe a few others.
Approach - chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and maybe a few others.

i don't have one sitting in front of me but you can probably browse chapter 10, if that's the one about special flights, emergencies, and such. you'll want to be familiar with the appendix's. appendix D teaches you how to do a position relief briefing. you'll do 2 briefings for every time you plug in.

there are some that are completely useless. like the section that talks about Sea-Lane Operations. who even works a Sea-Lane/Water Runway??

I like to use it to keep the door propped open. It's more cost-effective that way. Although, I must admit, when we're bored, we usually pick out something of the book and have a debate about it, just for the sake of arguing... like if towers can say point out or not.... blah blah blah... But rarely do we ever come to a conclusion other than being more confused than when we first started the debate.
