Terminal End of Course Test?
Posted: 10-14-2009, 12:20 AM

I was wondering if there is an end of course CTO test for the terminal class? I was also wondering if you already have a CTO will you be exempt from this test. I heard that somewhere and was wondering if anyone actually knows. I'm a VRA and was told to bring my CTO card and records with me, just in case. I know there is a PC and that shouldn't be a problem. Just curious. Thanks in Advice.

I just started class three days ago so don't quote me on this, but if you already have a CTO card, bring it, and you will not have to retake the CTO test. Also, if you have it recorded somewhere that you are trained in visibility you should bring that as well and you will not be required to take the very feared visibility test.

If I get to avoid both of those in the future I'll come back and let you know how it worked out. I only have a 623 and am hoping being signed off in the STS portion will be sufficient for my visibility training requirement.

you won't have to take the cto. FYI, even if you don't bring your card, the office that keeps that record is located at the mmac, so you can go over and have them print off a record of you taking the cto. as far as tower vis test goes I believe you need to be current in that to get out of it (just not sure what currency criteria are)

90 days was shouted out in class on the vis test... not sure if that is 100% correct, just what I THINK I heard from the instructor.

Correct, even if you already have a tower vis cert, you need to have taken a manual observation within the last 90 days and need to have your facility send a copy of the record indicating the date of the last observation. If you're outside of that 90-day window, the tower vis test really isn't that hard.

And to the OP, yes, you will take the CTO written test about 3 weeks in to the Initial Tower Cab course. It's a 75-question multiple choice test and you will receive a study book with the question bank on one of the first days of your coursework. That's the extent of the study material you get, though a lot of the questions are things covered in Basics (if you had to take that) and/or the first 12 days of Tower Cab. If you already have your CTO, bring your card to show the examiner on the day you take the test; then you won't have to take it again.

I have my training records as a DoD employee. My last day working was 31 July 2010. I have supplemental training documented from June listed as Tower Visibility Observations. Visibility Checkpoint Charts, Disseminate WX Information, and Prevailing Visibility are all signed off in my records. I also have two different limited weather observation certifications listed as well. This sounds like it should do the job; however, I have my doubts as to whether or not it'll be sufficient.

CTO test is a joke anyway. You take it after you have already passed the PV. You will get another opportunity if you fail at your facility.

Actually you take the CTO written exam after table top labs and before u even start in the simulators.. if u miss 23 or more on it, u can't take again for 30 days. It's only 75 questions, and it's not hard if u study the book we give u.. cb
