And yes, I know I should be grateful and all that, blah blah blah, so everyone else reading this don't respond back to me saying I'm a greedy SOB. Truth of the matter is my wife and I are in a SERIOUS pinch for money and I was banking on the extra $20.00/day that I thought I'd be pocketing by going with a cheaper housing place. We have literally had to borrow money from a close friend just to pay our rent. So yes, this ATC job opportunity couldn't have come at a better time, but in my opinion, if they say they pay out $92.00/day, they should pay out $92.00/day, period.
If I can't find someone to take my apartment in Saint Louis right away I will definantly be having to resort to the FAA CC. I really hope my place goes quick!

Sounds like you got in right at a perfect time! When are you headed to class?

I feel sorry for those of you who didn't get any per diem at all, really I am. But last time I checked I have just as much right to "bitch" about something as you do. I understand money is tight for everyone, trust me, I GET IT. I thought the forums here were a place for us to talk and express our thoughts about everything ATC related.

Again, I feel bad for those of you who didn't get any per diem. But when you're starting to get eviction notices from your landlord because you're late on rent and no other money is coming in (yes, this has happened to me, not just making this shit up) and you plan on an extra $20/day to help you get through the hard times, and then don't get it, it's a disappointment.

So forgive me for voicing my opinion on the subject... it's the last time I'll bring it up, I hope it's the last time everyone who didn't get any per diem raises the issue as well.

Yo Indy, since ur forced to pay the full amount, make sure the place you are staying has FREE FOOD.

Thats a huge way to save money. i'm a little out of the loop as in who offers food, BUT: I do know that Kim's Place (car suggested) is a wtf stocked fridge, and you get a free lunch box, so you can go the entire time without ever spending a dime for food.
Also, Isla Bella or however ya spell it has free breakfast, dinner, and beer. (and its on the bus route, so you dont even need to buy gas/have car!).

And ya dude, make that money work for you, its ok to bitch. Regardless of how "well you have it" due to the red book, the faa will still find ways to you. Everyone gets fucked, just in different ways/different times.

Per Diem is a reimbursement of expenses that get paid out. You get $50 to pay for housing. If you bill the FAA directly then you're coming right out and saying that you're not spending the full amount on housing. Why should you get money that you're coming right out and telling them that you're not entitled to?

I see your point Cirrus. It just doesn't make sense to me that if I were to pay the housing amount out of my own pocket initially, they [the faa] doesn't care how much the housing cost, they pay you out $92.00/day, and won't differentiate between the housing or the incidentals, they'll just give you the 92/day. So, even if I had submitted receipts for a housing place that cost $15/day (hypothetically) that I paid out of my own pocket and waited to get reimbursed on, they'll still pay me the full 92.00. However, if I put the same hypothetical 15/day housing cost on the government credit card, they'll only reimburse you the 41.60 for incidentals. See the difference?

So if I had the means to, I'd pay my housing cost up front and get reimbursed the full amount. But I don't have those means, so my housing goes on the gov't cc I guess. It just doesn't make sense to me why they differentiate between the two payment methods. If you go by your argument about getting money that I'm (or whoever) isn't entitled to, then those who pay their own housing cost up-front should not get reimbursed an amount greater than what the housing actually costs. Just my two cents. But enough of this

If you pay for everything out of pocket you're basically on the honor system. The assumption is that you have other costs associated with your housing expenses.

Technically if your expenses are less than what you're paid you are supposed to report it as income to the IRS, though I doubt anyone has actually done that.

When you get reimbursed for per diem do you actually get a physical check or is it direct deposited? Is it included with your normal pay check after the first time?

It never goes on your regular pay check. Everything is direct deposit as well
