How do you get the most out of your Per diem
Posted: 09-25-2009, 12:25 PM

Hey all, for those of you who have left, are at or planning to be at the academy, whats your method of madness to keep as much per diem as possible? Anyone got the scoop on a decent/cheap furnished/unfurnished place? What are you doing for meals? Any other ideas?

Totino's pizza - 1.25 each.
Fill up the freezer with them as soon as you get down there.

I have heard that it's not worth staying at Kim's Place or Isola Bella because they take all $1500 of your per diem for rent each month. A couple of my friends got back from the academy a few months ago, and each one had the same advice- find a place that is cheaper than $50/day and you can save a ton of money.
My buddy recommended Monclair Parc which is ~$700 a month for a 1 bedroom, and is supposed to be awesome. You rent furniture (furnitureoptions.com is a good option) and get cable and your all set... should come out to about $1000/month which gives you $500 extra to save each month!!
Any other questions please let me know.

But doesn't the FAA just pay up to what the bill is?

The FAA will fit the bill exactly, only if you pay with your government credit card. However if you pay it yourself, they will reimburse you the full per-diem amount... So if you have the funds to lay out initially, it could save you some serious dough.

great ideas keep 'em coming. I was thinking about renting a room, only Im just not sure if what I could produce as proof would be sufficient. Anyone know exactly how the reimbursement works? What I mean is can I just present a reciept from anyone saying I paid rent and expect it to be honored? I have read this is what they do when folks share a room at IB. So, if thats the case why wouldnt someone staying at a "friend or relative's" place be able to do the same thing?

Just make sure they're in your actual class for tower cab too - My Basics class is being split in half, into two classes for Twr. They'll be on opposite shifts. Before you arrange to move into a place with somebody, check the class numbers (listed on your FOL and your Academy Welcome packet) and make sure they stay the same, otherwise you'll be on opposite shifts - which is cool from a roommate/house perspective (only time you'll see each other is on weekends), but you can't carpool to class, study together, etc.

Keep in mind you do the apartment thing and you're also off the bus routes, so best have your own car.

you can have whoever rents you a room fill out a generic lease. easyly found on the net and turn that in. and dont use the government credit card.
