    Age Limit to enter Training

    Hi all,

    I'm trying to find out if I'm able to get into civilian ATC under my present circumstances:

    46 years old (going to enter a new career);
    Education requirements met (associates and bachelor in ATC from Embry-Riddle, plus law degree);
    Ex air traffic controller for the USAF;
    Licensed and instrument-rated pilot;

    I'd appreciate any feedback

    Re: Age Limit to enter Training

    I know the age limit for starting is 31, but since you already have experience I don't see why you would have to go through the academy for training. So I guess to answer your question I really don't know, but you might try checking out the FAA website or giving them a call. Hope this helps.

    Unfortunately you dont qualify for the FAA. The cut off age is 31.

    With your prior military experience... if you obtained a CTO while you were in you can apply for a federal contract tower(FCT). Thats about it. If you didnt get a CTO then unfortunately there is little chance right now for any type of ATC career. You could possibly request an age waiver with the FAA but honestly its a long shot.

    Thank you for the replies. I did get a CTO and still have it (even though that was 25 years ago).

    Do you know any resources for the fed contract route?

    Thank you... even though I've had some GREAT jobs and a great career so far, my ATCT experience was the best thing I ever did.

    Have you thought about airport management? I am sure airports need people with a law education and/or experience.

    The FAA did have a program called the Phoenix 20 where they hired former military controllers over age 31, but I believe that most of these inviduals hired had retired from the military.

    With your age your only option is contract facilities or overseas.

    Yeah, im pretty sure retirement was a requirement for the Phoenix 20 program.

    There is a FCT section here with a ton of info but ill give you the basics...

    3 major companies: SERCO (west), RVA (southeast), Midwest ATC (northeast). All they require is a CTO and a class II medical clearance. They may tell you that its been too long since you've controlled traffic but you do meet the requirements.
