Dispatch while waiting for an ATC spot
Posted: 01-06-2010, 04:56 PM I will graduate this June with a AA in Air Traffic Control/Dispatch and plan on taking the Dispatcher test. I plan (ok, hope) to be picked up before I turn 31 (May 2012). From what I hear it may take a while to go into the academy.
My question is, can I be a dispatcher while I wait. Is this an option or should I not even try this route? I don't know about time, but I'd guess around 9-12+ months. |

Posted: 04-16-2010, 01:26 AM I'm one of many dispatchers who was picked up for ATC. In my tower class there were several pilots as well. At the beginning they really were working on taking people with any FAA license and CTI grads. From what I hear lately they are looking more and more towards CTI grads only in the future. Dispatch can be fun, I miss it (although I still wouldn't trade back). Depending on how long they wait to get you in the door, you may be well off to take a job dispatching and have that as a back up jic.

Posted: 02-02-2011, 08:04 PM I agree. If you can get a dispatching job go for it! I'm a 10 year airline employee (6+ in dispatch) and I enjoy it; I start the academy on 18 February. It can be a fun job and you'll get to know the NAS and ATC side of things in a different light than even some pilots do so it's worth a shot. Good luck! If you want to work in ATL my airline is moving (and merging) there around August and I could pass your info along if you advise before 11 February.
