    ATSS Job

    Hello everyone,

How hard is it to get a job in the FAA? I'm a radar technician for the US Air Force. I have 4 years and half of experience in radar(One year with the GPN-20 and TPX-42 and 4 with the DASR and STARS). I have an associates degree from Embry Riddle in Aeronautics and another one in Electronic Systems Technology from CCAF. I still have another year and a half in the Air Force but Ive been thinking of getting out. Any reccomendations, suggestions, advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

From what I understand it is easier to get in the FAA as a tech than as a controller. FAA was going on a hiring spree for ATSS about a month ago...

Apply! Sit back and wait, if your credentials are good your sitting pretty over the rest. The FAA is hiring like its never had before, so Ive heard from the old timers. So look for the inquiry. I know ATSS that solely have generator experience, some mechanical backgrounds. Former Radar comm and nav guys kinda have the advantage.

Now if they would actually start hiring again we could test that theory

    Re: ATSS Job

I was an AF radar guy too. They were falling all over themselves to hire me. There's just not that many people out there with radar training/experience, so to the FAA we are gold. They were blown away that I knew what ACP/ARP meant.

BUT, hiring has been pretty strange lately. If they will open things up for hiring again, you won't have a problem. Put in for it, and if they can hire, you'll get a call.

By the way, the FAA uses a lot of CARSR's and ASR 11's. The ASR 11 is a DASR, while the CARSR is a DASR modified for long range. You'll fit right in.

Where are you at, by the way? (or where do you want to be)

Edited to add: You also have the option of buying your 6 years in the AF towards an FAA pension. I'm approaching my 1 year with the FAA, but on paper I'm a 7 year guy. It's good to not have to start over from scratch.

That was 2012. I haven't heard of any hiring spree for ATSS this year. Everybody is holding their breath waiting for the go ahead right now. Once we get the green light for hiring, we'll have another hiring spree since we are well below the contract minimum for techs.

oh yea, good catch. I got excited too.

Still no good news I can pass on to you. I was actually able to buy my initial tool kit this week though, so money seems to be opening up a little. I'm lined up for 4 classes this year too. Maybe that's a sign of something. Or maybe not, who knows.
