ATC Medical Requirements Questions
Posted: 09-16-2009, 06:46 PM

I'm interested in becoming an ATC but I have some medical conditions that I'm fairly certain would disqualify me. I tried e-mailing the NATCA for a definitive answer but they said they couldn't tell me and that I should try out anyways. However, I'm currently working 50+ hrs a week so I can't exactly afford to quit my current job and attend an ATC program only to fail the medical test at the end. I'm hoping someone here can provide an answer.

I have terrible unaided vision (-10.25 and -11.75) and when I wear contacts it's around 20/30 in the left and 20/40 in the right.

Also, due to a birth defect, I have terrible hearing with ~50% loss in normal/low ranges and up to ~80% in the very high frequencies.

Now that I've actually typed out this post; these probably sound like stupid questions with obvious answers but maybe there are ways to get an exemption? I'm just thinking if it was that cut and dry then the NATCA would've just told me to bugger off in the email I sent them.

To be blunt, you would not qualify on both hearing and vision. 20/20 corrected, and usually no more than a 30-40% hearing loss.
