Topamax for Migraines
Posted: 10-22-2009, 12:08 AM

I was recently diagnosed as having migraines. I have only ever had one migraine with aura as an adult, but have experienced frequent headaches. My doctor chose to work on preventing my headaches altogether. He said that there are two medications that he prescribes for migraines- Topamax and some other drug that causes weight gain. Not needing to put on anymore weight, I went with the Topamax.

Is this medication automatically disqualifying even if I do not experience any of the possible side effects?

Yep, topamax is a anti-seizure medication (so was the other one that caused weight gain) that is used to prevent migraines. It is dysqualifing.

Thanks!

I spoke with my doctor. We're going to try some other options.

As an applicant, is it possible to receive a medical waiver for migraines? The more I read, the more it seems that the rules are different for employees and applicants. Is this the case?
