Seniority with the new contract
Posted: 02-26-2010, 10:18 AM

Hi, I am on temporary duty in ZMA and the Union is being complete obstructionists. I understand wanting to help out the members that you will be working with for the rest of your/thier careers but I am a bargaining unit member too. I came to help them, they seem to blame the "snowbirds" for the perceived inability by management to get staffing up to acceptable levels. Wrong target. Anyway my seniority date has been "reset" twice, with no input from me,to the date I arrived at the facility. This is after my facility providing my true seniority dates. What are the union rules for seniority? I have no version of the contract except the light green tentative agreement sent out last Aug. and that says the Union will set seniority. Have I somehow lost 25 years of seniority?

Thanks in advance

I am a Union member in good standing.

You are entitled to your opinion, of course, and I am sorry to hear that you believe the union is being "obstructionist" on this issue. But without knowing anything about this situation until reading your post, I know there must be much more to this and that some lines of communications have been crossed. That's because ZMA is an exceptionally well-run NATCA local, led by Fac Rep Steve Wallace. I urge you to have a one-on-one discussion with Steve to discuss this and let him know what your concerns are so they can be addressed. Steve is phenomenal to deal with. Fairness, integrity and honesty are his trademarks. He is a good friend of mine. swallace@natca.net

Also, regarding the 2009 contract (Red Book) ... they are still in the FAA/federal government printing process. Hang tight on that. Hopefully they'll be done soon.

In the meantime, you can access the entire contract electronically at:
