Young controller at JFK
Posted: 03-03-2010, 07:43 AM Boy Talks to Pilots from JFK Airport Tower
Updated: Wednesday, 03 Mar 2010, 6:03 AM EST Published : Tuesday, 02 Mar 2010, 10:49 PM ESTMYFOXBOSTON MYFOXNY.COM - The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating an air traffic controller who apparently let a child speak to pilots over the radio from the control tower at John F. Kennedy Airport. The child made five transmissions, and the pilots actually enthusiastically responded to him. The child appeared to be supervised. But aviation experts, including a retired Delta pilot, say that having a child on the radio is a bad idea because lives hang on every radio transmission. In fact, only FAA-licensed controllers are supposed to communicate with airplanes. Boy Talks to Pilots from JFK Airport Tower |

except he made the mistake of saying on frequency that he had brought his kid to work and a pilot said they wished they could bring their kid on the job too. Otherwise it could be a possible argument to be made. It was harmless but I do understand how the general public would have cause for concern. I feel bad for the controller and his family

re: Young controller at JFK
Posted: 03-03-2010, 10:03 AM I said this would happen when I first posted the audio clip. The instance by itself is not a big deal. The kid did good and was closely supervised. The controller even stepped in once or twice to put in a quick transmission. It's the fact that this was made public that is forcing the FAA to react like this. If that clip was never posted on the net then FAA Admin probably never would have even found out about it. But because it's out there they need to act like the kid was off in the cab by himself putting thousands of lives at risk.
