Center Shift Schedules
Posted: 11-15-2008, 04:25 PM

Hello all, I was recently hired into Cleveland Center but live in Columbus. I can't really afford to move right without taking a kick in the teeth on my house, plus my wife has a career in Columbus.

I am wondering if someone could explain how the shift schedules work at Cleveland Center so I can gauge how many days per week I will have to stay with my parents in Cleveland. It's about a two hour drive from Columbus. I am looking for Cleveland specifically but any help is appreciated.

Also, how does the new hire training program work in Cleveland once I am done with the Academy? Is the shifts different for controllers in training?

Thanks.

i know u want cleveland center stuff specifically, don't blame u. at the center i was at u did 2 night shifts then 3 day shifts, then 2 days off. trainees don't normally work midshifts. i worked something like this:

Sun 1500-2300
Mon 1300-2100
Tue 0800-1600
Wed 0730-1530
Thur 0630-1430
Fri-Sat RDO

IF u had a mid, Thur would be 2300-0700 (although it really is Wed night u show up)

sorry i don't know what exactly cleveland does. rest assured it would be something similar. while ur in stage II, III, or IV training you'll be M-F 8-4 type schedule.

It all depends. Usually (manning permitted), you can try and change shifts once CPC. It is much, much easier to change to later shifts since most want to work early. In my case, I like later shifts in order to avoid morning traffic on the way to work (I also like my sleep). Since I have the mid, I only have to get up early one morning. Getting up early one day a week isn't too bad and it helps me fall asleep before the mid. Being without a family, this schedule is ideal for me. I'm sure things will change once I have kids. Right now this is what I work:

Tue 1600-2400
Wed 1300-2100 or 1500-2300
Thur 1000-1800
Fri AM 0600-1400
Fri PM 1000-0600
