What can I do to train for ATC?
Posted: 12-21-2009, 07:46 AM

Hi, new user here.

I'm currently 17 and I wish to train to become an Air Traffic Controller. Are there any good simulators out there which come close to the real thing? Are there any manuals?

Thanks

Dean,
First and foremost you must not forget that those simulators out there are "GAMES", they may be fun, fairly realistic, but nothing can prepare you to work live traffic other than live traffic.

Another problem with simulation games is that there is no one sitting beside you to teach you proper procedures, techniques, and just as important, good phraselogy.

Air traffic control is working in a 3 dimensional enviroment using 2 dimensional equipment, so it forces you to think about having a bubble around each and every aircraft that is 3-5 miles laterally, and 2000 feet vertical (1000 above and 1000 below).

To be honest with you what really is cool, is watching these guys here in Afghanistan flying UAV's. But to be honest with you the best way to learn to become a controller is going into the Air Force, Navy, or Marines and becoming a controller, then if you want to trying to get on with the FAA.

You can also go to a CTI(College Training Initiative) school. There are 31 schools ranging from a few thousand dollars a year in tuition to $25-30k a year, most of them offer 2 and 4 year degrees and there are some "2 year" degrees that can be down in a 1-1.5 years. I'm also 17 and a senior, when I graduate I'm going to CCBC which will take me a year because I'll already have my PPL(Private Pilot's License) Below are two good links that should help a lot.

fastest possible way into the FAA hiring process is to get your private pilots license while youre still in high school and then go to beaver for 3 semesters when you graduate. they train through the summer (no time off) so its only 1 physical year. get on their waiting list asap. start touring towers, centers, and tracons. get a feel for the profession.

That's what I'm doin. BTW I don't think there is a waiting list anymore, last time I talked to J.S. there wasn't and they haven't even started taking apps for fall '10 yet which is when I'll start.
