How is it there? Is it all the doom and gloom that people always says it is? Any tips or tricks we should know?

Re: Whos Going To ZNY
Posted: 05-04-2011, 10:47 AM The post by xraygeorge is spot on. It will be doom and gloom for you if you come in with an attitude that you are the best thing in air traffic control even though you have yet to prove yourself one bit. Keep a low profile for your first few months/year and eventually you will be given a chance to prove yourself. If you are invited to go out for drinks etc after work take the invitation and get to know your coworkers. You will be working together for 20 years or more. Basically don't be a prick, and you will be given a shot in training. All you can ask for is that shot, it is your job to study your ass off so you know everything about everything in your airspace. Then the tough part is using that knowledge and applying it.
Recent things done by trainees most of whom have now washed out: Expect that you may need to study at home while in training...don't ask for overtime to study. Don't do something that effects live traffic at an inactive sector and lie about doing such things (every key strike is recorded by AF, in this case /ok was used). Don't make fun of, or say you are better then a trainee struggling prior to you actually training yourself. Don't blame your trainers if you keep running planes together, I can teach you how to scan, where to look, the danger spots on the scope and so forth, but I cannot teach you how to see two a/c at the same altitude coming together, that should be common sense. The list could go on...if i could remember them all. Everyone in the building will agree your attitude is the most important thing for your first few months, your first impression is a big deal. Take the advice of everyone and if you are a loud ass mother f-er keep your mouth shut until you are done with training. |

Re: Whos Going To ZNY
Posted: 05-04-2011, 10:51 AM How about the rumor of you guys getting upwards of 50 people this year? Also, how about the cost of living there? How do developmentals afford to live around the area? How hard was it for you financially when you first got there? Thanks!

Re: Whos Going To ZNY
Posted: 05-04-2011, 11:08 AM I was selected for ZNY and have a class date of May 16th 2011. I obviously dont know what it is like at ZNY but I grew up on Long Island and work literally one mile from ZNY right now. The AG pay of ~48,000 once you get to ZNY is a little tight. You can manage if you find a one bedroom apartment for around $1000. Once you hit D1, and the pay increases, you should definitely be feeling more comfortable and it wont be bad. Just dont go on any spending sprees and live simple for a little while.
