I want to be an ATC... Help!
Posted: 06-22-2011, 10:28 AM Hey first time posting here. Im going to be a junior in highschool and would love to be an airtraffic controller. I am confused on which way to go, OTS or CIT, I plan on getting a 4 year degree at a university in music after highschool as more of a backup but also because i would really like the major.
What do you guys think I should do? I mean if CTI only takes like a year and isnt much money and makes my chances of getting hired by the FAA more, than maybe i should do it. Please help as I'm really confused! Thanks |

Re: I want to be an ATC... Help!
Posted: 06-22-2011, 11:47 AM Dont do the music degree. Do the CTI FIRST. Hiring will be slowing down by the time you get done with high school and the CTI. If you do the music degree then you will be too late because you'll still need at least a 2 year CTI program after that and 6-8 years (depending on how fast you finish the music degree) will be most likely be too late to get hired. If you really want to be a controller get a degree that has something to do with the field - ie a CTI. If you want to play in a band get a music degree

Posted: 06-22-2011, 12:04 PM I totally agree with alzy. Go to CTI school first. Find a community college that offers it and finish the program there. Then transfer and do your music degree while you wait for the FAA. What state are you in?

Re: I want to be an ATC... Help!
Posted: 06-22-2011, 12:37 PM Unfortunately there is no set way to do it, the OTS hires will be taking a back seat for a very long time, but military and CTI still don't gaurantee anything. However, the quickest way to get your name in the hat would be to go through CTI, from that point you will be able to apply for any position (except military) when they come up for the next 10 years, including the OTS if and when. You are young and have time, that is the best thing for you no matter which way you go.

Not 100% sure... but 95% sure that if you have a CTI you don't need the 3yrs exp.
