advice needed. Will I age out before i could get hired?
Posted: 08-02-2012, 01:20 PM

I'm currently 27, will be 28 mid September and very interested in an ATC career. Only problem is my age is really screwing things up. I can do a 2 year CTI and if I sign up to start taking classes now and things go perfect, I could graduate 15 months before I turn 31. I would hate to go through all the expense and effort, only to age out waiting for a job. Am I cutting it too close and should I look into another career path? Does age have anything to do with hiring, in terms of will a younger person be hired before an older one? I'm too old to join the air force. Thanks for your time. I've learned a tremendous amount reading as much as I can here.

It's something worth looking into, but with any of the options you have there is still a risk. Some grads that were hired from Advanced ATC waited over a year to be hired. Some found out they were hired right after they graduated. Check it out... Air Traffic Control School Air Traffic Controller Training / Academy / College - Advanced ATC Valdosta Georgia United States
Did you like the program and feel you got your moneys worth? I would go this route in a heart beat but the $50k cost of school plus cost of living in GA for a year has me concerned. Would hate to go though all this and not get a job in time. I would be devastated..haha. Thanks for the information on the school. Much appriciated

Don't listen to Romeo India. Ever single post he has ever written is a push for somebody to go to that school. Hes obviously got skin in the game and is just an advertisement . If you choose to do it do cti, that is your best option no doubt.

I know someone who went the CTO route through advanced atc and is still trying to get hired almost 2 years later.

Of all L3 Communications (TX) and Advanced ATC (GA) graduates that posts here, I do not recall a single one receiving a TOL.

do you have any college credits? if so you could find a good 2 year cti program and make it through in 1 year. I have a friend who had a b.s. and finished cti in 1 year. I had an a.a.s. and finished in 5 semesters.

You are probably too old. You can certainly try a school program (I would recommended a CTI program over a CTO) and if you network hard it could work. I was picked up in the first panel after my CTI graduation, but if that doesn't happen for you time will quickly start running out.

Age limit for US Navy is 34. Could have a CTO in 5 years with an equal amount of experience. Granted, you would be ineligible for FAA, but you could work contract towers.

If this isn't the route for you, I'd suggest a CTO school, or possibly choosing another career field.
