Transferring
Posted: 06-29-2009, 10:44 AM

I am really new to the whole process...I just took the AT-SAT for pubnat7. When I started this process, I was working for an airline and going back and forth between two cities to see my boyfriend. Two of the many reasons I applied for ATC is because I wanted to work at a stable place, and move closer to where I wasn't having to commute between two/three cities.

As Geo Pref emails are about to come out, I was thinking about CO or TX. However, with my boyfriend not being at a major airline yet, and with no one hiring, he could be based somewhere else in 5-10 years trying to commute. For example, I wouldn't want to be in a situation where I got Houston center and then he gets based somewhere else in a couple years...and we are both living in Houston, when we really don't want to.

I know I have heard that it is extremely hard to transfer. I've heard where some people just eventually have to quit because they can't get transferred to where their family is.

The more information I can get the better I can make my geo prefs...can anyone give me information on that process. I haven't been able to find much in the forums.

To my understanding, it's a few years after being at a facility before you can transfer. I assume you would have to be a CPC before you can. But it's not for sure that you'll transfer will be approved. It has to be approved by both facilities. They have to make sure it wouldn't hurt staffing, like leave the facility you'd transfer out of short handed. And I'm unsure of a transfer between types of facilities. Like enroute and terminal.

All that's just what I've gathered. Not sure how accurate it is. Hope it helps.

you can leave 1 year after CPC, transfering to a busier facility is easier then transfering to a slower one.

What my interviewer told me was it is easier to transfer as management and if you outshine others. Also that you have to have the blessing (recommendation) of that facilities chief so don't burn any bridges or be a jerk.

If your boyfriend/husband transfers/is transferred to a different location, it would be grounds for an ERR (Emergency Relocation Request) and would have a higher priority than a normal transfer.

Or he/she may like you too much cause you are so bad ass and not want you to leave.

I think you should be planing more for your future and not his (boyfriend). Is he ready to give up his career for you as you are for him? I'm in the same boat as you are, but my significant other will be joining me wherever I go. Good luck and I hope you get what you want!

I believe if you receive a promotion(IE: become a manager at another facility) that your transfer cannot be stopped. Your facility can only hold you back if you are making a lateral move to a different facility.
