From Military to FAA
Posted: 08-20-2009, 04:52 PM Hello all,
I am new to Stuckmic.com so hopefully no one already posted the same discussion. However, I get out July 25, 2010 and will be in Iraq starting Oct 31, 2009. I have been a controller/WS since 2000 and would love to get picked up for DFW ARTCC. Does anyone know what my chances are in getting a job there? I have worked in a GCA for my first 3 years, Columbus Approach (2nd Busiest in AF), and Balad Center, Iraq (1st busiest in the world at one point) twice and my third in October. Do you think I will be a while till I will know if I can even get a job there? How long does it take to get a school date? One more thing: Since I have 10 years of military service, how much would it cost to purchase them for the FAA? Does it change your pay if you buy those years? Does it show up as 10 years in the FAA towards retiring? Thanks everyone! Marc Flores |

Re: From Military to FAA
Posted: 08-20-2009, 07:43 PM chances of getting hired on by ZFW: good.
btw, it really doesn't matter if it's the busiest in the AF, or busiest in the world. FAA operates different than the military, not to mention they're hiring a bunch of OTS people, so I don't see why you couldn't get in. will it be a while: yes. Depending on when you get done with your tour of duty(ies), I recommend applying about 6-8 months out. What I experienced was the opportunity to move around my class dates. So, even if you're hired within that 6-8 months, you can still have some room to fiddle with the dates, especially if you communicate with your HR rep. They're human, and they understand. How long does it take for a school date?: Depends on whether or not you've got the nerve to ask her out and what kind of person she is (assuming you're heterosexual). Just Joshin ya. It takes a while, but again, that all depends on when you get out and when you apply. Cost to purchase 10 years: unknown (at least by me). I know you have 2 years to buy it back interest free, but the longer you wait, the more it costs. There's a quirky formula they use, and I don't know it. But I did hear that if you wait too long, it will be A LOT more than you ever thought. Does your pay change: No. Well sorta no. You still get the same amount as everyone, MINUS whatever it costs you to buy back your time. So in a way, yah, you get paid less. But definitely not more. 10 years will count for vacation time and retirement pay only. Not towards NATCA seniority or anything like that. However, you'd still have to complete 25 years of service before being eligible to retire (or 57, whichever comes first), with that in mind, you'd have 35 years towards retirement pay. FERS Retirement Click on the link. It will take you to the FERS retirement section. There are more links there where you will be able to read up on it... (i.e. you can retire after 20 years under special circumstances, etc.) hope this is helpful. Keep your head down! |

Re: From Military to FAA
Posted: 08-20-2009, 07:58 PM He pretty much summed it up above...
It will probably cost somewhere around 4-5 grand to buy back 10 years. It will pay for itszelf the first few months of retirement tho. Invest now for a great payout in the future. Also, the FAA doesnt really care where you worked as long as you got a certification. |

Re: From Military to FAA
Posted: 08-20-2009, 11:42 PM no more direct hires... you will need to apply at USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site and wait for the panels to meet. They meet about every 3-4 months and choose applicants to fill openings. Being VRA with ATC experience you should have a better chance than most as long as the facilities you are willing to go to are hiring. Talk with a local manager where you want to go. If you can convince them that they must have you they may put you on their request list. Managers dont actually hire controllers but they can "request" certain people usually. Sometimes its hit or miss but it cant hurt.

Re: From Military to FAA
Posted: 08-21-2009, 06:36 PM Marc,
There isn't a specific application that you fill out to get hired at a center or tower, it is all the same. As someone else stated you need to the USA jobs website or FAA jobs and apply for one of the vacancies. Any paperwork that you need can be downloaded from the web site. Take your time and develop a good resume, this will help you when you go to fill out all the paperwork to apply to the FAA. Having actual approach control experience will be an asset, be patient, the FAA doesn't move any faster than the military when it comes to getting things done. |

Re: From Military to FAA
Posted: 08-21-2009, 06:41 PM again, fill out the application at usajobs and get the ball rolling. This is the ONLY way to apply for the FAA. They choose from this... Apply for the VRA announcement.
