Send one's resume/cover letter through e-mail, or standard mail?
Posted: 09-21-2008, 12:30 AM

I'm another PUBNAT applicant -- this place has been quite the resource during the lengthy wait.

I have been advised by a very kind NATCA representative (of the facility I wish to work at) to send my resume to the ATM and the District Manager.

I have prepared a resume closely to the official government format, as LawnGnome had suggested, and of course, I intend to accompany it with a brief cover letter.

The dilemma is...would it be more appropriate to send it through standard mail, as opposed to e-mail? It may seem like minutia, but such matters are important to me. Would it have more impact, or would they appreciate a humble e-mail more?

Any opinions would be gratefully accepted...And before anyone says it -- yes -- I do have too much time on my hands that I worry about this!

I worried about the same things as you did....If I were sending my application to an actual facility or someone besides OKC, I would send it via mail...ATMs get countless emails a day....and they might not be too computer savvy, so opening up an email and downloading an attachment might not be the best way...and if you copy/paste your resume in the body of the email, it won't look the best either.

When I was going through the hiring process, I sent a bunch of ATMs my resume, I always printed it out on nice clean paper, attached a cover letter, and sent it directly to the facility to the ATM. I think they appreciate that...nothing says you have to do it that way though. The ATMs probably will like that you took the time to send something off via snail mail, and it gives them a reason to be doing something other than messing around on their computer.

Anyways, I don't think you can lose with regular mail!

Ammo, how'd you get in touch with them? Just calling up the facility, or NATCA, or...? That's a good idea, I think I'll do the same.

I e-mailed the NATCA reps of the facilities I was interested in (I had to contact the secretary of the NATCA region for a few of their names/e-mail addresses...), and out of the 6 I e-mailed, only 3 wrote back (thankfully, the three I had wanted the most...).
I suspect the rest are either not e-mail savvy, or are inundated with work, understandably.

Anyhow, I found one to be quite helpful, and welcoming, and I later asked if it would be prudent to send my resume to the ATM, etc...he was my advocate, and gave me their name and address. Another NATCA rep gave me another ATM's name for a potential tour, and I was able to find their contact info. on the FAA directory (directory.faa.gov).

I know several others on the forums have had success with calling the tower directly, but knowing the staffing levels, I wouldn't wish to impose or risk being dismissed altogether. I tried once, but they didn't answer, nor return my voice message.

I was able to find the hub manager's name on the FAA's page for my regional office, under "local coordinators".

I hope that this helps – at the very least, 'networking' will give us all something to do during the lengthy wait.
