Facilities in North Carolina
Posted: 11-08-2009, 04:21 PM

I am working on an application and trying to decide on my states of preference - can anyone tell me about the facillities in North Carolina?

I'm especially interested in Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, and Greensboro.

What is the busier side of the facility at these locations, tower or radar?

Should a controller with ~4 years of military ATC experience have any issues checking out at CLT or RDU? I am sure some facilities have better training programs than others.

How is the cost of living in these areas, compared to the pay?

Thanks!

I lived in Winston-Salem, comparable to Greensboro when it comes to cost of living, and worked (non-ATC) in Concord, outside of Charlotte. Both places were pretty affordable when it came to rent and housing... it's been a while and I don't remember exact costs, but my salary was pretty low (about $29k or so) and I didn't have problems covering rent at a decent place with enough money on the side for gas, food, occasional ski/beach trips, etc.

The Triad area, of which Greensboro is part, is a great place to live. Lots of tech and research opportunities if you have a significant other who works in that kind of thing. Real scenic -- used to ride through endless tobacco fields. And it's only a couple hours drive either way to a beach or the mountains. Southern hospitality, sweet tea... hard to think of more you could want living in Carolina.

Anyway. Not much help on the actual job, but in terms of living there, I loved it. Might not be for you if you're a real big city person. Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte are big, of course, but it's not... you know, like New England non-stop activity big feeling.

Thanks very much for the words on living in the area, much appreciated! Sounds like a nice place to live - thanks again.

I'd love to hear from someone on the facilities themselves, also, if possible.

Thanks!

I'm a child of North Carolina, currently living in Raleigh and trying to determine my chances of staying in the area. I'm applying as OTS.

I gave a phone call to the RDU facility several weeks ago and was told that the manager is unable to give tours due to time constraints. I'm in the process of trying to get in touch with someone on here who works at the facility to snag a tour.

The FAA pubs here may be of some help:

I got friends at GSO and CLT. They are all prior military and they all are or will be checked out. I hear from others that RDU is a great place to work.

I just took a tour of the facility today, chances of CLT hiring more than 6 people this upcoming screening is very low, they are over staffed with 46 trainees and checking out there could possibly take up to 3 1/2 years, instead of the usual 2.

If you are still interested in info about Greensboro, am a controller there.
