facility transfer help
Posted: 01-02-2010, 12:06 PM i work at a level 12 artcc. i am quite overwhelmed at the quantity of traffic here. im checked out on a few d-sides, and my instructor says im doing fine, but i'm getting my butt kicked. is there any way to transfer to a lower level facility, a tower maybe, while i am still in the training program here? i know the new contract says you are allowed to transfer if you fail, but i haven't failed yet, i'm just really not keeping up. if you can please reply thanks.

Re: facility transfer help
Posted: 01-02-2010, 02:35 PM don't do it man. muscle through. every developmental has terrible days where you leave wondering what the hell you're doing controlling planes. you just have to pick yourself up and go back in the next day. you're supposed to get your butt kicked. your instructor expects it and gets paid 10% extra to get you through those times. if he tells you you're doing fine, you're doing fine. he isn't blowing smoke.
just think of everyone sitting around on this site who are hoping they get hired and wishing they were in your shoes getting their butts kicked. stick with it. the benefit to starting at a level 12 is that in 20 years you'll be making significantly more money than someone who started low and worked up to level 12. we're talking 20-50k. hang in there. |

Posted: 01-02-2010, 05:24 PM dude just keep going at it..ive been in your position. it can feel really overwhelming, but whatever you do dont give up. if your instructors say you are doing well, you probably are. there is a huge learning curve in this job and eventually you will round it.

Re: facility transfer help
Posted: 01-03-2010, 05:10 AM If you are keeping write ups out of the A, B, on the training form then I would say that hang in there. It takes time to build a comfort level working that level of traffic, so as your experience builds you will become more proficient and more comfortable.
On the other hand if you are running off to the bathroom to puke, or are a nervous wreck after each session, then you might want to discretely talk to your NATCA facility rep (DO NOT TALK TO MANAGEMENT UNTIL YOU HAVE TALKED TO YOUR NATCA REP). If you have some radar sectors it is easier to get into a approach control/tower, but with only D-Sides you options are more limited. |
