I understand what you are saying but what if the guy calls you as "144G" and you reply with "N144G and it is really "C144G". When someone calls you cold with a callsign of (for example) "114G", it could be an airliner, or a military aircraft or a foreign registry aircraft. If you don't know that it is supposed to be C114G vice N144G then you are using the wrong callsign. If the 7110 is saying use "N" followed by the numbers then they are telling you to use the wrong c/s. I am voting for using the callsign the aircraft gives you on initial contact verbatim until you can establish what his full c/s is.

That's not going to happen with a Canadian acft--they don't use numbers. At least I have not seen one in 30 years. Example: CGTND. They always start with a C, and then use only an F or G for their second letter, then it's a combo of three more letters.
