My understanding is they used to offer areas, now it seems that they have streamlined hiring and combined the offers for the entire US. Of course rules change often. But as of late, there have been posts here of people getting a wide range of offers at the same time. Like Denver, Miami and another to choose from.
The FAA needs people everywhere, so if you get an offer (or 3) and none of them appeal to you, I would suggest that you either ask for something you want or perhaps decline the offer and let them know why. You would be a lot better off going to where you want to go (If you have a preference) then trying to transfer later.
One last bit of advise. I would suggest not taking a position in a place that might be questionable to afford at $33K a year with hopes of getting a pay raise soon or the FAA revamping the pay system. That is a sure fire way to set yourself up for a major disappoinment. I know the FAA is advertising controllers making $95K+ in 3 years, but I don't know where those particular controllers are (I know there are none in Albuquerque). Some places like Miami or Southern Cal Tracon could have controllers making $33K after 3 years+ because lack of training. $33K a year won't rent a room in a crack house in San Diego. You will figure out very soon, unfortunately, you will be dealing with a bunch of dishonest management for as long as you work for the FAA.
Good luck
PS Don't get me wrong, this is a great job.....and a terrible employeer.
