I think the difference is found in being eligible and realistic. Yes the DOD grants waivers for over the age of 31--but the competition is so great for those jobs, I can't see you getting a waiver. Plus in the DOD--alot centers on who you know. I thought in the job announcements I read for the AF, you had to have actively controlled within the last year--I could be wrong though. If you had a CTO you could try an FCT, but even that might be a stretch when you haven't controlled in almost 20 years. I would stay in your field--it's a good job and you have security. There is very little security in the FCT world--your only one blown class II from not having a job.
