Posted: 07-29-2008, 02:42 AM

Hey, does anybody know what the current salary of contract ATC is. (starting pay and top). Preferably for Midwest ATC Services. I was going to apply for Cin., OH (Lunken Munic. Airport). I checked out Midwest's website, and they had no salary info posted. Anybody have current info. Also interested in benefit info. Thanks!!!!

My friend works for Serco out in Palmdale, CA. She told me after shift differential, and weekend pay, she brings in about 64K. But she doesn't draw bennies from them because it is something like $700/mo. I thought that was a little ridiculous myself.

Midwest does not reveal wages and basically prohibits employees from revealing their wages, even to other employees. It's considered proprietary information. Contract towers are under DOL wage determinations. You can find those numbers at the DOL website. Most are in the 25/hr range and the "benefit money" is around 3 dollars an hour. Unlike serco, midwest mandates that benefit money go towards health "benefits", with the small remainder going into the 401k. If you have a spouse with insurance, all of the money gets put into the 401k. In the past, the benefit money was added to the paycheck. That got changed, causing much speculation on who actually benefitted from the benefit money. Long, sordid, twisted tale.

Effective 1 OCT08 the new wage will be $25.79/hr (a $0.76 raise) and the new benefits pay will be $3.24/hr... so added together it will be $29.03/hr.

Then factor in incentives like 25% additional pay on Sunday shifts, 10% extra on night shifts and an extra full days pay on holidays weather you work it or not. About 60-65k/year is average.

I don't count "benefit" money in when calculating my income. I look at how much (or little) hits my bank account every 2 weeks. That's the figure that dictates how much gas, food and housing I can afford for my family. You can play all the FAA-type numbers games you want. Now if Midwest cared a whit about it's employees, it would return to the days of the employees determining how the benefit money gets allotted. But I suspect they also recieve a "benefit" from the current arrangement.

most all government positions state that benefit money must go to benefits and the leftovers to 401k, etc. Nothing new here You'll get the money when you retire. I don't have any issue with it. Never have. I guess others might though. It's a non-issue to me. Either I'll get it now, or I'll get it later; with interest paid.

The issue with the vast majority of controllers is the fact that we are forced to pay for over-priced and generally susbstandard insurance. We cannot use the benefit money to buy quality insurance on our own. I don't have a problem having the balance put in the 401k. For the money I pay for coverage on myself with the company plan, I could buy good insurance that would cover my entire family. They call it a benefit, but I see it as a liability. That's the issue. I am quite certain that it's all legal and what not, but that doesn't make it a benefit. Frankly I think it's a huge waste of resources for them to have set it up this way. Someone is getting rich off this plan, and it sure aint the controllers.
