RVA question
Posted: 03-23-2009, 08:48 PM

I saw on their website that they have a requirement for a cto and a minimum of two years of tower experience, was curious if this was still accurate? I have an odd combo of a cto with three years of center.

If you have a CTO, my suggestion is to apply with RVA and see if they say anything about. I have seen individuals hired with a CTO issued back in 1981 and had never worked ATC since fired from the FAA. Good Luck.

How did you get a cto and 3 years of center? Chances are if you handled traffic at a center then you should be able to handle anything RVA has, so there are exceptions to every rule. They hire army controllers that have never worked fixed wing a/c so I don't see why they wouldn't hire you. Good luck.

i 100% disagree with this statement. i haven't worked for RVA. but i have worked for 2 Serco towers and in a center. i would venture to guess that well over half of the controllers in the center couldn't get checked out at that Serco tower. it's just my opinion.

working center is sooooo different than working an FCT. it's not even close to being a "if u can check out at Z(XX) then you can work at XXX FCT tower". although, there are many (like the one i'm at now) that my 5 year old son could probably check out at. i'm exaggerating, but u get the point.

I agree with Roddy Piper, tower and center are two completely different animals, although I do believe if you have an aptitude for this job you could be successful in either option.

To answer the other question I got my CTO when i attended Beaver, but when I got hired my only option was enroute, so that's where I went. I worked there for just over three years and was almost certified when I resigned.

I went ahead and filled out the online app. for RVA, what can it hurt, right?

At the time I was fed up with everything, The White Book, living in Jacksonville, ZJX, so I decided to go back to school, which I have done and am almost finished with. Now though that 'itch' to work traffic is coming back so I decided to apply for a couple of the FAA announcements and fill out the app. for RVA, the catch for me being facility specific this time. I won't move again, I have two places I will work or I'll stay 'retired'. I'm not doing center and I'm not moving out of this area, I like where I live and grew up too much to leave again.
