I have to take the LAWRS certification test tomorrow afternoon, and was wondering if anyone had any insight on exactly what to expect? If i take good notes throughout the CBI course and study the 7900.5 will that be enough to get me through it? Or do they just come out of left field and hit you where you dont expect it with the questions?

I have heard many say that it is the hardest test they have ever taken. I think part of it has to be because the CBI course sucks. Half the time you have the right answer and it tells you its wrong and proceeds to tell you why and what the right answer is and it was exactly letter for letter what you had put down.

If you took very, very thorough notes, and can reference them during the test, you should be fine. If you have to do it closed book, well, I can't say it's a piece of cake. There will be questions where 2 of the answers both seem to work, and there will be very, very obscure questions covering situations that you won't remember covering on the CBI. You get like 2 and a half hours for the test, so take your time and really think about each question, but if you fail, you definitely won't be the first one.

After you pass this test, you will never, ever let your certification slip because having to re-do the course and test is one of the worst imaginable punishment for controllers.

Good luck man, theirs sets of notes from 3 years ago from other people and it helped me a little. That test is really tricky, and you think your passing and got the answers right, then go to the next screen, and it said you got a 64%. I dont know how your facility is, but to have a extra edge on the test, download a copy of the 7900.5 on your laptop if you have one, and since it is open book, you can search words in the 7900.5 brought up on your laptop, and will bring up multiple locations in the book of what your looking for. Im not saying I used that the third time I took the test, but I ended up with a 96%. But if you dont pass, youll have to wait 2 weeks, so good luck...

Limited Aviation Weather Reporting Stations...Basically the test is to certify you as a national weather observer. Make some good cash, for pushing a button every hour.

Man, I must have made 1000 weather observations over the last 2 years and I haven't gotten paid anything extra for it . . .

Seriously though, if you're at a tower without a weather observer stationed there, it's usually a duty of Flight Data to take the weather observation (or verify that the ASOS is correct, if so equipped), make the ATIS, and send it to the overlying TRACON and FSS (if it's not done through some sort of automation).
