Ive seen as low as $55, but usually they are closer to $100. All depends on where you get it done.

$100 is about right. I've also paid around $85. Never cheaper that I can remember.

I have paid $65 each time I went (though not for a while) here in Colorado. As was said, they dont charge based on the type of exam, so generally I too went for the first class. The bright side to that, is after a certain period of time (one year I believe), it will lapse to a second class med, then I believe two years later, lapses to a third class.

Medicals NEVER "lapse" into a second or third. If you get a 1st class, it is a 1st class on day one, and still a 1st class on day 537. Only the PRIVILEGES you may excercise change. On an application, or whatever, if you got a 1st class 1.5 years ago, you still put 1st class, not second.

This is a confusing topic and most people misunderstand it just like you did; I did at first as well. Hell, the majority of my new hire pilot class at skywest thought the same way you did. It's a common mistake.

Find an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) this is the link to find a flight doc near you. just call one of their offices and i'm sure you'll get a good rate close to home.

I was actually able to negotiate mine down to 60 from their advertised rate of 75, but I think it's cause the receptionist had a thing for me. Hopefully she didn't get fired. :O
