Ok so I just got hired at Midwest, I'm very excited and very happy. My question is can anyone tell me about the company? I'm new to this life outside the military. But I'm not new to Air Traffic Control, so I'm not too worried about traffic and such. But still any help about the company would be great. Thanks, I'm going to DET

I worked for Midwest for 2 1/2 years. Not a bad company to work for, others might think otherwise. I mean is straight up pay, show up do your job well and go home. Main thing is to get along with the people you work with, very important, because is not many of you, mostly four or five. If you have the opener don't open the tower late, that will get you fired before you get out of bed. Set up 3 alarm clocks when you have the opener if yo have to.

Remember that unless you are retired from the military, FAA or DOD, contract work is temporary. Eventually you want to get into the FAA or DOD to get a good retirement and better benefits. If this is your first time working GA traffic, don't worry too much, the controllers there will teach you what you need to know, just don't be arrogant and say well in the military we did it this way. Take everything they say and learn from it, remember you are on their ticket while in training. If they think that you are not cutting it or are not able to get along with the others working there, they will tell the manager and they will let you go.

Overall Keep and open mind and a good attitude. Congratulations and best of luck...

I know that Midwest has towers in Afghanistan and Iraq and I've been trying to get on with them before my contract runs out with the company I'm with in Afghanistan.

I worked for Midwest for almost two years in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. The pay for the location was great. We had a hard time keeping people around due to FAA and DOD hiring, but the folks I worked with were pretty cool. So far it's been the most relaxed environment I've been in and I've worked AF and FAA. Our boss used to do tape talks every friday in the cab and we'd all sit around and have some good laughs at the things we heard on the tapes. Definitely some good times. The biggest drawback was the health care. For my family it was about $650 a month and I paid almost $450 out of my own pocket. The coverage is decent, just really expensive. Remember, if you're young, contract employment should be a temp. gig waiting on the FAA. As for a career, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're already drawing a retirement from the FAA or military.
