Getting hired as a contract controller
Posted: 11-22-2009, 12:05 AM

I get out of the military next month, and I have applied with RVA, Midwest, and Serco. How long will it be before I hear something? I have a CTO and a year experience. I would love to be working in Jan. Anybody that has experience with this let me know please.

Again, it comes down to where you are willing to go... it shouldnt be too hard to get picked up as long as they need someone where you want to go. If you are willing to go anywhere then it shouldnt take you more than a month or so to get picked up. And that's factoring in the 2-3 weeks it will take to get your hiring packet, security clearance, medical and drug test done. All of these you will need done before starting.

I'm willing to go anywhere. I hope you are right. Just want a job in ATC while waiting on FAA. I love ATC, and i just don't want to do anything else.

Eagle hires during winter for the increase in traffic and Martha's Vineyard hires in summer for the same reason

As Redwing said, its a 4-5 month gig...ends in late April/early May so you may be too late in the game for it. I say that as it will take 2-3 weeks to get your paperwork straight and up to 30 days to check you out. My understanding is that more often than not they get a retired FAA guy from the Denver area to come up.

Where did you get this information? I got a phone call today about that position. Mine and 3 others were pulled to be sent to a guy named Jerry. I guess Jerry makes the final decision. I told the guy I was available Dec 16 and he thought that was a perfect time. I hope it is not too late; i'm hoping to here from this guy in the next few days. Anybody know any contact info for this guy they call Jerry?

dont just apply and wait, you gotta make phone calls. i've talked to the hiring manager on the phone a couple of times now, and the info i got from him is, the job openings are very dynamic-slots come and go in a matter of weeks. you need to call about a month out and they can get you filled in. all you need is a cto and a resume. seeing as you only have a month, you better get on the ball!

Grhhh! Sorry I made a profile just because I have been seeing a lot of posts that kinda upset me. This is not intended to start trouble... I have 2 CTO's and a combined 6 years experience in ATC and I still have trouble getting in with a few SERCO facilities in AZ. I can tell you that the part that upsets me is watching people walk into Williams Gateway (Mesa, AZ)(Uber busy) and the ditching them after 4 or 6 months to run off to the FAA. If you did not know but this makes it very hard for the rest of us to get someone like Jerry Alvarado to trust us that when we say we WANT to work for Serco that we mean it. That is why in a different thread (Questions about Serco Hiring process) it is mentioned that they will tend to stray away from people younger than 31. No one will tell you that "Sorry your just too young" but, if they have someone that's 35 and someone that is 25, both have same experience.... Needless to say my money is on the 35 year old because Jerry and the ATC manager knows that they are not going to run off in 4 months when the FAA come's a knocking.

As for a good contact number for Mr. Alvarado, get in contact with a ATC manager at a facility that you a interested in and they would be more than happy to give you his number. I cant tell you how many times I've been referred back to him.
