Re: Would you support a points based hiring system?
Posted: 08-26-2010, 12:59 AM Think getting a degree for me would be worth it?
About to get a CTO, already have a Ratcf ticket. Figured i'd get my Pilots license then i have about 2 years left in the navy. Will a degree in aviation or anything really make a difference? |

Re: Would you support a points based hiring system?
Posted: 08-26-2010, 01:10 AM No, not really. You will get hired off your military experience alone, BUT, say 15 years from now you want to apply for a sup job or tmu or whatever.... if you have a degree it will look nicer on your application. So, if you dont mind it, the smart person would get it while IN THE MILITARY while you can get it for free.

I wonder how long it'll take to change. The report we quoted earlier was released in 2008, and it said some things were already in progress. But then, we're dealing not only with the federal government but the FAA, so... |

If someone can't pass a test that requires you to do simple math, pay attention to simple rules, and have a decent grasp of situational awareness they shouldn't be anywhere near airplanes, especially any that I am on... The only "point system" the FAA should use is someone's ATSAT score. If you can't handle the pressure, stress, or whatever you want to call it when you take the ATSAT and actually score well on the test, you shouldn't even be considered for employment. |

Re: Would you support a points based hiring system?
Posted: 08-27-2010, 05:57 PM There have been some very interesting arguments here. The votes for yes and no are pretty much split down the middle at this point, so obviously many of you have different views on the matter. Personally, I put maybe. I think that while the AT-SAT is a very good process for determining if you're the type of person who could become an air traffic controller, I also believe that a person's track record should be analyzed and taken into account as well. Not necessarily just for education/aviation experience, but for life in general. (ie awards, achievements, job performance, etc.)

Re: Would you support a points based hiring system?
Posted: 08-27-2010, 09:36 PM Keep in mind... this is a poll that's been taken mostly among applicants. I think it's pretty safe to say that a non-controllers opinion on this one is worth the bandwidth it's written on. My own included.
There's a reason that it's the way it is. As much as some applicants would like to think that XYZ from their background will help them controlling, it hasn't proven to been the case in practice. I'm sure just about everybody who washed out didn't think it would happen to them, after all. |

Re: Would you support a points based hiring system?
Posted: 08-27-2010, 10:59 PM How would you factor in ATSAP scores tho, since military controllers dont take it (nor should). Unless we are just talking about OTS people. And by OTS I mean ots/cti. The agency considers them the same thing after they are hired.
