CTI Program: Degree Question.
Posted: 05-12-2009, 02:08 AM

I am getting my degree at Mt Sac in Aviation Sciences, we were told that it was possible to graduate with a minor in Commercial Pilot. My question is that, what advantage of this give me?

Well the first thing you need to do is figure out what "Commercial Pilot" is. The more important thing than the title of this minor is what licenses you will actually get. You need to find out if this means you will earn your Private, Instrument, and Commercial etc. The advantage will be knowing the air traffic control system from the pilot's side. Especially if you do instrument work. Will it help you get selected? Probably not because when they select you they won't know...will it give you a better understanding of the system? I think so, I too am a pilot and it's much easier to understand things if you have been doing them (i.e. IFR clearances, ILS approaches, talking on the radios etc.)

Overall, it's advantageous only to you it's not going to help you get selected over another individual. I really advise you to look into what "Commercial Pilot" is. Best of luck.

The commercial pilot program is basically a stepping stone for people that are becoming pilots already. It doesn't negate any of the other flight requirements. I honestly don't know the point to the program.

Something like that. I need to get more information obviously but I was curious if anyone has at least heard of something like that. It sounded like my school trying to get me to stick around an extra semester just for kicks.

CTI only requires the three courses (ATC I, ATC II & Aviation weather) no matter what your major is, you can also either have an AAS or a Bachelor same pay does not affect your selection.

At MSCD here in Denver, I know you can major in Aviation Management and minor in Aviation technology. The technology side requires you get your AGI I believe.

As for helping get an ATC job, there is a section on the application asking about all ratings and certificates

Thanks everyone for your help. I will probably go with what J1252 said and join the flying team next semester if I can get the money together.
