CTI Grad, dangerously close to age 31... question about next step!
Posted: 05-12-2009, 03:36 PM

Okay, so I graduated last December (2008), applied on the ASAP site under the CTI announcement, and when I click on the "submitted" button under the application, this is what it says...

Referrals are based on submitted questionnaire at time of referral.
Date Questionnaire Submitted: 3/2/2009 10:46:43 AM
Referral list FA-AAC-09-20549: Issued on 04/21/2009 for the Throughout Kentucky duty location at the FG-1 grade/payband.
Your application is among those being reviewed by the office with announcement # AAC-AMH-09-CTI-12655. You may or may not be contacted for an interview. Please continue to check back for status updates.

Okay.... so now what??? I know there was a panel that met in late April to select candidates. Does this mean I have been selected? I tried calling several times to the CTI contact at OKC but my calls and voicemails go unanswered.

I am severely stressing out here, because I turn 31 on July 10, and I NEED this job like you wouldnt believe. Any advice from fellow CTI's would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!!!

um, shit. keep calling. Really the only option. If you get desperate enough try even driving to them. (doubt it would help) Sorry, I dont have any useful info. Maybe try military route. Although, I think they have the 31 age limit in that as well.

Come on guys any one have any advice for him?

I have seen this question before pop up, search for it in the forums. However i have heard of people in your situation getting rushed thru to get before your 31st, however i assume that is based on the current situation. Your CTI person in charge at your school should help you, if not contact Amy at OKC. Best advice call your school and get on your directors ass...

I'll go out on a limb here and say you should be receiving a PEPC invite email within the next week or two from the PEPC coordinator. Respond back with the soonest PEPC choice with a statement that you need to have your PEPC by X date as after that date you will no longer be eligible due to the age requirement. (if you don't already know you get your TOL at your PEPC which freezes your age; the TOL)

Shortly around there you should also be getting an email from your HR rep introducing themselves and letting you know they are your contact for the remainder of the process. That's the person you need to get on the phone and call and email and let them know you're approaching 31 and need to get a TOL quickly.

Sooo, as long as you get your TOL by your 31st bday, they can take as long as they want/need to get you a class date.

Found this for you too. Your HR contact once they've let you know who they are may be able to freeze your age by setting up an interview via the traditional route if I am reading this right.

Policy Bulletin #12, In-Process Rule for Air Traffic Control Specialist Positions

Updated: 1:58 pm ET January 18, 2008

This policy bulletin applies to: Filling air traffic control specialist (ATCS) positions in the terminal and en route options.

Policy bulletin effective date: 10/07/02. This policy bulletin will remain in effect until cancelled by the Office of Human Resource Management.

Use this policy bulletin in conjunction with: EMP-1.20, Maximum Entry and Retention Age For Air Traffic Control Specialists.

Background information: Subsequent to the implementation of the ATCS maximum entry age, problems arose concerning the eligibility of those applicants who were certified for employment and were undergoing pre-employment processing when they reached their 31st birthday. To resolve the situation, the Office of Personnel Management and the Department of Transportation agreed to permit the appointment of individuals who exceeded the age limit after being certified and during the selection process prior to entrance on duty.

Purpose: This policy bulletin clarifies the employment eligibility of applicants who reached their 31st birthdays while applying for air traffic control specialist positions in the terminal and en route options. It applies to any hiring activity (e.g., Veterans Readjustment Authority (VRA), Air Traffic-Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI), etc.) where the maximum entry age restriction for air traffic control specialist positions also applies.

Exclusions: This bulletin does not apply where there is no air traffic control specialist maximum entry age restriction. For example:

* hiring into the flight service station;
* hiring of individuals who were previously appointed to a terminal or en route position; or
* hiring under EMP-1.20, Maximum Entry and Retention Age for Air Traffic Control Specialists; specifically the Retired Military Air Traffic Controllers Program.

In-Process Rule for ATCS Applicants: By agreement between the Department of Transportation and the Office of Personnel Management, if an applicant turns age 31 after being officially notified to begin the pre-employment process for an air traffic control specialist position, FAA can complete the hiring process despite the applicant being over age 31. (NOTE: Minneapolis Community & Technical College Air Traffic Control Training Program (MCTC ATCT) graduates must also have graduated prior to age thirty-one).

It is important to note that just submitting a job application or passing the ATCS written test does not constitute being in the pre-employment process and "stop the clock." The FAA must have notified that applicant to begin the pre-employment process. This contact would be, for example, sending the pre-employment letter and package of forms with instructions to contact an interviewer.

Even with the military route, the FAA only exempts the age 31 rule if you are a Retired military controller.
