Question for CTI Grads...
Posted: 05-26-2009, 06:32 PM Hey all,
For those of you who graduated (or are preparing to graduate) from a CTI school with your B.S. in Air Traffic Control, do you know of any other fields in aviation/aerospace where a person could get a job in... other than as an ATCS? I am asking because with each passing day, it looks more and more likely that I will not get hired by the FAA, as I will be turning 31 this July and still haven't heard anything from them. I need to start looking at career alternatives other than ATC, but would still like to stay in aviation. Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

Re: Question for CTI Grads...
Posted: 05-26-2009, 06:39 PM Well I went to a SAMA conference last year at UND and talked to a rep at Jeppesen. He said they are always looking for people with any aviation background. It wouldn't hurt to look to see if they have anything. There is also FSS. I don't know if they have age requirements at all. If all else fails...judging by your location, you went to UND....ask Bill or Gary what some of your options could be.

Re: Question for CTI Grads...
Posted: 05-26-2009, 06:39 PM My degrees were in Aviation Technology, Management, and Administration. That pretty much limits me to anything aviation LOL... Jeppesen is always a good bet, airline management, aircraft management (on a private level) FBO management, there are a number of fields ANY aviation degree will look good to.

Re: Question for CTI Grads...
Posted: 05-26-2009, 10:33 PM Did you take dispatch for your degree? You can get a license that never expires up to 6 months after taking the class(with an extension). An interest of mine if ATC does not work out is airport management. You should talk to airports managers to see if they would be interested. Be confident in yourself and your worth, show them you have the drive to succeed and be open to any position they have to start with and work your way up.

Re: Question for CTI Grads...
Posted: 05-26-2009, 11:31 PM OK, im going out on a limb here and gonna say that a buddy of mine told me that you can use the degree to get into law school than become a lawyer for a small airport or a major airport. I dont recall what it was called, but some law schools might except a cti degree to get into law school.
Im probably wrong, but might be worth checking out if youd be interested at all. Im sure facilitys need lawyers, too. |

Yea, that was what I was thinking about. Or something like it. Ive also heard that a 2 year cti degree could get you into it. Some special rule because the program was something special. Dont remember the details. Gonna ask my friend about it and report back.
I might even look into it if ATC doesnt work out. But, it better! I really love ATC thus far! Curious...Does anyone know, if this is real, how long aviation law school would be? |

Not sure... but that sounds interesting. We'll see though. I had to take an Aerospace Law class (twice) at UND and while it was interesting, the first teacher I had really turned me off to it... (I.O.W. he was a real prick) but that's good to know. Only downside to it is, I have no desire to go back to school for a long while, seeing as how i have a shit-ton of student loans already! I think if I were to go back, it'd be to get my M.B.A. in Aviation Management or something similar.
