CTI Students get direct Teleconference with FAA
Posted: 09-29-2009, 02:14 PM

Announced today, from an email last night, the CTI students will be invited to participate in a teleconference with the FAA directly. It's a Question and Answer, so the CTI students can ask anything they want. Mt. SAC's teleconference date is this thursday, Oct 1.

They're asking students to submit questions ahead of time so we can pick the best ones, because we've only got an hour.

Anyone on here want to ask a question? I'll see if I can get it in, and post the results of the teleconference.

See if they have any answers on selection panels and time frames... Also, are they going to extend the CTI announcement? It seems like they are going to but just to make sure.

For everyone's sake on these boards, I'd love to hear them clarify the FY10 hiring picture. Is the decision being driven by the expected increase in transfers or something else? Could the hiring picture change in a few months?

I'd also be curious to know some stats: how many applicants are in the pool that have completed PEPC/clearances and are waiting for class dates? How many applied for Pub8 and how many will be tested?

As far as I understand, each school will get one hour to themselves to ask questions, this means there will be several days of teleconferences for the different CTI schools. Hopefully the questions that don't get asked in our one-hour session are addressed in others.

From what was said at the conference, the CTI student with a qualified score would have a better chance. But you have to remember the people we are talking to handle putting together CTI student "packages" for the hiring process. They do not do the hiring. That is a different department.

They did not know the hiring numbers for FY10. In fact they specifically stated they do not decide that type of information and do not know how many people or what states are hiring at the panels.

Well, things were a little different than we were told. About 10 schools were on at the same time, rather than just one, so not all questions were asked. Besides, Alaska kept asking some very basic questions that took up about half the time. Wish they would have just checked StuckMic before the conference!

I'll try to get a transcript or some audio uploaded here, there was some really good information. Some highlights:
  • The CTI announcement will be open indefinately. There will be no major lapse in the ability to apply through CTI.
  • There will be no preference or consideration given for those who are almost about to turn 31.
  • It is suggested that most students will get to the academy in less time through a CTI application than through an OTS application. (Obviously there's more to this situation than simply "one is faster than the other," which was not addressed)
  • The CTI staff would prefer that you don't apply to OTS applications...It causes them more paperwork.
  • There is no way to bypass the OTS basics training if you are CTI and get picked up through an OTS application.
  • The september panels have been moved to October, though they still anticipate holding selection panels quarterly.
  • The numbers for OTS hirings seem to be 9,000 applicants, 5,000 who qualified - however you interpret those numbers.
  • There is no list of things on your police record or credit report that automatically disqualify you, as far as they know. Each case will be investigated on a case-by-case basis.
  • If you get a CTI application code in any way other than officially, they will cross-check your information with the CTI graduates list, and you will not be accpeted. In fact, they are considering criminal action for those who have done so, and may bar you from federal jobs.
  • Apparently the Robinson Aviation phone number and e-mail are not supposed to be public information, and they're getting pretty ticked off about people calling them if they haven't been selected for the AT-SAT test. If you have called up Robinson and lied to tell them you received an e-mail in order to get a scheduled date, you may be disqualified from the job forever, and criminal action may be considered.
  • There is no official hiring freeze, (which may have been inferred from some areas having said they have COMPLETED hiring for the 2010 fy - they apparently had no idea that offers were being rescinded in SoCal) and selection panels will still continue as planned and hiring will still progress based on need.

Also, a better look at the hiring process/panels process was offered, though its important to note that they aren't the ones who do the hiring, but they do work closely with them:
  • Hiring managers get two lists of individuals who have selected their location.
  • On the top of the list (no mention of which one) are the Veterans. Managers cannot pass up veterans. It sounded like she was inferring that they MUST be hired. That's what I understood.
  • The first list is CTI students. Hiring managers see your entire application. There are no "points" awarded for any item, they just look at whatever is on your application and take it all in. Specifically, they do not award any points for Bachelors Degrees, Pilots license, etc., but they DO see those things, and will mentally take them into account. So it will depend on the hiring manager's perceptions of what skills or experience are valuable for controllers.
  • Hiring Managers do not see your AT-SAT score (this contradicts what I've heard from a hiring manager, but that's what she said), they only see a W or WQ. That's all they know about your AT-SAT score.
  • Hiring Managers will go through a CTI list and pick up everyone they want from the WQ and Q categories. Once they have everyone that they consider hirable from those lists, they pick up the OTS list to find any additional individuals to fill any remaining holes.

I don't have the information right infront of me, but this is what sticks out in my mind. If I have made any errors, let me know. And if you have anything to add from the teleconference, please do so.

Solid writeup. I vote for sticky status. Also I'd vote up your rep but it won't let me. Apparently I'm not actually that cool.

Did they get any more specific on hiring numbers besides the 9000/5000?

Also, can we append the below to every thread that's ever touched on this topic?:
