States hiring?
Posted: 12-11-2009, 05:02 PM I heard from someone that just retired from management that they are only hiring in 7 states this fiscal year (2010). Anyone know the truth to that? Anyone know of any states for a fact that have been hiring this fiscal year? So obviously SINCE October 2009. Thanks.

Re: States hiring?
Posted: 12-12-2009, 11:35 AM if they told us what states they were hiring for everyone would apply to that state. theyd rather have the people who really want to be there than the people who just want to get their foot in the door and then transfer to where they really want to be.

Re: States hiring?
Posted: 12-12-2009, 02:33 PM It wasn't that only 7 states had facilities that needed people, obviously there are lots of facilities that need people. She just said that the FAA is only hiring in 7 states. And yes that would really suck. When I came into school 4 years ago they made us think that once we graduated we would be get a job so quick because the hiring is going to pick up so much. Now it sounds like it has slowed down a lot.

Re: States hiring?
Posted: 12-13-2009, 10:38 AM No one could foresee the dramatic downfall the economy was going to take, which is one of the main reasons hiring has slowed down.
CTI grads were getting picked up very quickly until about a year ago. I know a guy who graduated in December 07 and was at the Academy 5 months later and that was a norm for our graduates. I graduate a year later and it took me 10 months to hear anything. Once the economy starts to roll again and controllers start to retire, then hiring will pick back up. |

"In the end they're still a recruiter aimed at putting bodies in seats. All about bringing in money. Sad."-probably the dumbest thing I've heard in a while It has nothing to do with the economy or professors being evil villians trying to recruit students for money.Look at the FAA's budget. The FAA hasn't passed a long term budget since 2003, that legislation terminated in 2007. Since then they have been operating on "continuing resolution" which authorizes the FAA to spend 90% of the previous years operating budget. So that means 3 years later when FY 10 occured in Oct that they are operating at 70% of the 2007 budget. When you are operating a massive and critical government structure can you justify hiring every geek off the street and add countless salaries, especially when trying to increase the pay of the current controller workforce and implement programs like ADS-B and WAM? There is a large demand for controllers right now, no doubt about it at all. You're profs weren't bullshitting you so they could not make any extra money (they're retired FAA, they have money and therefore don't give a shit whether the university pays them an extra $2k). There are plenty of retired and retiring controller spots to fill. What there isn't is cash to fund and staff FAA HR, OKC, to put asses in those seats, or the ability to pay the salaries of said asses. The FAA may very well only be able to hire for the 7 most needed states in FY 10, I would expect maybe 300 with a std. dev. each way hired for all FY-10. However, once congress kills healthcare reform or puts out some sackless version of it we should see the combination and passage of the FAA Reauthorization Act which will allow for lots and lots of growth. |
