Should I go to CTI School out of Military?
Posted: 02-04-2010, 08:03 AM I am veteran Navy controller, the only problem I have is, I was on a ship the entire time and as we all now shipboard atc doesn't qualify for the VRA announcement. I have been waiting on pubnat8 for a while now. I scored pretty high (WQ) on it but I am considering going to beaver community college to broaden my options. I am going to be 26 this year which leaves me a little room on the age limit. They take the GI bill and the navy smart transcript which would more than likely knock off a year of school or maybe more. All signs point to yes but I am married and I live in NH. I am not sure if I want to uproot my wife and its only a year. If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears thanks.

Re: What to do?
Posted: 02-04-2010, 08:54 AM I am a May 2009 CTI grad, got my TOL in January 2010, and am finishing up all the pre-employment paperwork and examinations. In 2006 I had kinda of a similar situation, (HAVING TO MOVE). I had just graduated with a 4 year degree in Sports management and couldnt find a job, so I moved (with my wife)from NC to TN to go to a CTI school beause at the time it was the only way to become a controlle if you werent VRA, or CTO.
After all of that I am on the cusp getting my dream job. It wasnt easy moving, but it all seems to be worth it as long as everything keeps moving forward. All that being said, I would do the CTI thing. You are already in the system as an OTS for Pubnat8 so while you wait you might as well get your CTI certificate which can only increase your chances of getting selected. I am a hardcore supporter of CTI, because it got me my TOL, but I am not going to enter that debate. But trying to get in both ways only doubles your chances like having two tickets in a raffel vs. just one. |

Re: Should I go to CTI School out of Military?
Posted: 02-04-2010, 09:41 AM Don't limit yourself to one CTI program - if you are going to move anyway - look throughout the nation. Check out the two CTO programs - one in TX and GA - expensive - but maybe with the GI Bill help, possible.

Re: Should I go to CTI School out of Military?
Posted: 02-04-2010, 09:49 AM Link Communications is in Denton, Texas and Advanced ATC is in Valdosta, Georgia. They are NOT affiliated with the FAA like a CTI school and no one has seen any of their grads yet. They seem kind of iffy about how it all works, and IMO I would stay away from them. CCBC(Beaver) does have a CTI certificate program for people with previous ATC experience and it only takes 9 months. Idk if you would qualify or not(I think the school determines that), but I would give them a call.

Posted: 02-04-2010, 05:48 PM If you want to stay in the south, check out the CTI program atMiddle Georgia College. They have a two and four year program, and you can get a CTO from there as well.

Re: Should I go to CTI School out of Military?
Posted: 02-04-2010, 06:02 PM Edit: CCBC no longer has a certificate program.
Noid, MGC doesn't offer a CTO anymore, neither does CCBC. There was some new change in regs that made it where CTI schools can't offer CTOs anymore. That's pretty much it in a nutshell, and that's coming from J.S. the ATC director at CCBC. I don't think the two CTO schools were affected bc they aren't affiliated like a CTI school is. |

Re: Should I go to CTI School out of Military?
Posted: 02-05-2010, 09:02 AM It would be Beaver or GA if you could still get your CTO. Their all "equal" now. GA takes two years to do, and Beaver can be done in just under a calendar year.
