Re: Tulsa Community College
Posted: 02-07-2010, 03:32 AM Well I'm here and enjoying it so no complaints. The instructors here are top notch and they make learning the material fun. Both are retired controllers and they can tell you what you will need to know for the Academy and what you will need to know for the real world. This emits a lot of stuff that enters your head and doesn't get reused. Classes are fun and its fun to watch the "fryers" (gmcmanus will get that one) as they are earning their wings at the other flight schools on the field.

Review for Tulsa Community College (FIRST)
Posted: 03-05-2010, 01:20 PM Since I'm the first to give this review, I'll try to be as specific as possible. I'm in the batch of 2nd semester students, only 1 group of kids (1st semester students) is before me. So it's a very new program.
First I'll start by informing you that it is required at TCC to go through them to get your pilot's license through the ATC program. The ONLY exception is if you're already obtaining it or if you already have it. And you must run it by Matt Wise and get it approved (administrator). ----------------- ATC Section: TCC has 2 main VERY experienced instructors so far. You start off with Bob Cimino with Intro to ATC (1st semester). He will also be your instructor for ATC Tower 1 Ops (2nd semester), Tower 2 Ops (3rd semester), Radar 1 Ops (3rd semester), and Radar 2 Ops (4th semester). Cimino is one of the best instructors I've ever encountered, even since Kindergarten. We learn a lot of material, and when I say a lot, I mean A LOT. But the way he presents the material ensures us to learn it quickly. I have 'aced' every test that has been giving, along with my best friend that is also going through the program. We have barely studied too, and that is just because we haven't needed to. I guess it's also because we pick up on the material easier (plus I have family that are ATC-ers, so I knew quite a bit already). But Cimino is an amazing instructor, he really is. Once you get to Tower Ops 2, you move into the simulator (the same simulator that is at the FAA Academy). Ben Bancroft also joins you in the class. He is also a highly experienced controller. He has substituted in our Meteorology Class and in Tower Ops 1. As far as I can tell, he is a great instructor. ------------------- Privot Pilot's Section: A lot of struggles came at first and are still being worked on. They follow the Jeppesen guide, and as some of you may know, it sucked. Not to mention, the Private Pilot Ground School teacher sucked. They have replaced him though. One of the hardest classes I've ever had, and not because I didn't apply myself. Our instructor was HORRIBLE. My flight instructor took over for the 3rd semester students, and as far as I know, it is going much better. I didn't take Instrument Ground School this semester, because it is being offered in the summer, so I'm going to take it then. I will update my post after I do take it. We fly 2005 Cessna Skyhawk 172-S's and 172-R's. All of TCC's planes are equipped with Garmin's G1000 equipment. Personally, I'd rather learn on the standby instruments, and then move on to something high tech, but apparently I don't have a choice. 95% of the students prefer the G1000's, but since I probably won't own a plane equipped with G1000 equipment or anything else fancy until later in my career, naturally, I'd want to learn on the standby instruments first. ------------------ That's all for the ATC portion of TCC's program and the Pilot's License Portion as well. I'll keep this thread updated as I start new courses I hope this was helpful.-aBoo |

Re: Review for Tulsa Community College (FIRST)
Posted: 03-10-2010, 11:44 PM Pretty accurate review!! I am one semester behind you in the program in some respects. I am taking Instrument Ground, Intro to ATC, and two other classes that are not on the program plan just to beef up my resume.

Re: Tulsa Community College
Posted: 03-10-2010, 11:55 PM Ya I am in Intro to ATC, but I am also in Instrument Ground too. So in a sense I am behind, but all I lack is a couple general classes and the ATC courses. I will probably add aviation related classes to dress up my resume. I am also taking Advanced Flight Theory.
We all need to get together and hang out sometime!! |

Re: Tulsa Community College
Posted: 06-05-2010, 06:22 PM I start flight school in less than a week. I may see some of you guys in radar this fall. I'm a VRA applicant and chose to attend since OU was gonna take 4yrs and i can leave tulsa in about a year. What do you guys think of the school? And any tips for flying? I'm really not to excited about flying a plane.
