Hampton University - Ratings - Reviews Summary
Air Traffic Controllers are people who operate the air traffic control system to expedite and maintain a safe and orderly flow of air traffic and help prevent midair collisions. They apply separation rules to keep each aircraft apart from others in their area of responsibility and move all aircraft efficiently through 'their' airspace and on to the next. Because controllers have a demonstrably large responsibility while on duty, the ATC profession is often regarded as one of the most difficult jobs today.

I am a 2010' Graduate that attended from 2006-2010. Hampton University itself is a rich experience as it is a Historically Black College. The degrees offered at Hmapton are all 4 year bachelors. The curriclum as listed is very comprehensive and indepth and gives you a solid foundation in aviation as well as indepth knowledge of the Air Traffic system. The aviation department is small and friendly and its easy to find and talk to these professors and they will help you with anything. Our department also does a good job at finding internship opportunities throughout your matriculation there. Personally I interned with the Airport Operations & Airport Budget and Finance division of the Metropolitian Washington Airports Authority at Washington National Airport. I worked as a FAA Summer Intern at the Tower and TRACON at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. I also worked as a FAA employee during the summer before my senior year at Dulles International Airport Control Tower and then I transfered to work co-opt during my classes at nearby Norfolk International Airport Air Traffic.

These combined experiences give me alot of contacts to help when your ready to finally enter the FAA, and I was able to impress and showcase my skills as I use what I learned at HU on the job. Our campus is beautiful as it has a historic look and is surrounded on 3 sides by water. The sports are good and the atmosphere is the perfect blend of academia and fun. More importantly our location gives us a good working relationship with nearby Newport News / Williamsburg International Airport, Langley Air Force Base, and Norfolk International Airport. Our aviation department also does a good job at securing scholarships, financial assistance and stipends for qualifying students.

Hampton University is an excellent institution that has a reputation of excellence and standard of high achievment. Like him or not President Obama was my commencement speaker for graduation in 2010, and no average school will have the sitting President of the United States as a guest speaker. I am a walking representation of my school and I will always be happy and proud to promote it to the next person interested. If you are looking for a school that has professors with real world experience who will teach a meaningful curriculum and give you help when needed to prepare you for you career then Hampton University is the place to be. The only negative thing I can say is the price is harsh for someone looking for a bargin as HU is a private institution and the program is 4 years.
