Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands
Posted: 08-03-2010, 04:52 PM

So the US Army "Space and Missile Defense Command" announced two openings at Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands.

My initial thought is to jump all over this and apply. What more could a beach bum ask for then a tropical island and lagoon in the middle of the Pacific?!?

Well, seems as this place is the "catcher's mitt" for Vandenberg AFB's missile tests...?!? Do we serve as "test subjects" for other WMD testing going on?!?

Anyone know more about this place? Seems a little too good to be true... I'd love to apply and take the family on a two year Pacific vacation, but I want to know what I'm really getting myself into.

I remember thinking about applying for it back in '05/'06. My biggest thing was the "ok, it's been 2 yrs, see ya later". After the contract there was no placement somewhere else within the DoD. To some that might not be a big deal, but I didn't like the idea of having to start all over again in 2yrs.

Yeah I hear ya, but right now it'll be nice to land that 2152 code and cut off my old age issue I have approaching... plus it'll be like one of those Iraq deployments.. only nobody will be shooting you, you can go Scuba diving, and take your wife

I thought KWA was a FAA tower? Do they have both there?

I know you can't trust everything you read on the internet, but I ran across a site that quoted, "After 40 years of service, the FAA left Kwajalein in January, 2006. The Department of Defense has re-opened the facility as Kwajalein Tower."

Thanks noid...I've searched the announcement and this is about all I could find concerning "priority placement:"

"Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees."

Any idea what that means?

Radar, we think alike...I thought the same thing about this being a deployment with hot temperatures and sand. But this one comes with blue water and family!

Do you know for sure if it's accompanied? The contractor there for the space junk/sat. trackers (KRS) doesn't allow dependants, that's why I ask. I know there used to be a website that was either put up by FAA or DOD employees and I believe they had family with but I don't recall for certain.
