Re: Anybody work at Quantico?
Posted: 02-02-2010, 03:28 PM Let me know if the info that SSgt Young gave you doesn't pan out. I have some friends up there as well, and personally know the NCOIC really well, as well as a couple of the civilians there as well. JB was right about making a point of introducing yourself to the civilians, as they have a lot of pull. If I am not mistaken they are looking, or will be looking for a TSS/TSN..... Let me know if I can help.....

Re: Anybody work at Quantico?
Posted: 03-10-2010, 08:45 PM Hey, gents. Hate to bring up an old thread...but I've got a question pertaining to this that I think someone in here may be able to answer.
I'm currently LCpl USMC 6113 CH-53E flightline mechanic. Right now, I'm 2 years in service, year and half in fleet with 3 years left in my contract. I've been speaking with my career planner about LAT moving (available in October) to Air Traffic Control with the marine corps. At that point in time, I'll have picked up Corporal. I'll be granted my LAT move (likely) but with the stipulation that I have to reenlist for at least 2 years on the tail side of my contract. I'm ok with all of this, since ATC is what I wanna do when I get out. However, here's my problem. My wife is a experienced flight attendant, and wants to go back to doing so. Also, with a kid on the way, we'd like to stay east coast due to all of our family being there. Quantico is the best option for us being that there are two large nearby airports that she could hook up with. For example...Jacksonville and Beaufort have NOTHING. Point being...I want ATC at Quantico. Career planner says he can't put a base recommendation in for me, and that I'm up for wherever a monitor decides I should be. This is a little too "open" of an idea for me to be comfortable considering my wife's situation. Any ideas for getting what I want? The only idea the career planner came up with is to put in my HMX pre-screening because they supposedly have their "own air traffic control" or something like that. When I get to school, talk to the instructor and say "Hey, I've got an HMX pre-screening and I'd like to go with HMX." In the perfect world, he would pass that up to his superiors and call in to the monitor about it and see what he could do. However, speaking with a former HMX mech, she said this doesn't sound accurate. Any insight? Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone. |

Re: Anybody work at Quantico?
Posted: 03-11-2010, 01:15 PM Evasive- When i was an instructor at the school house our lat moves went like this. Once they were approved they went to the air station near where they were at. In your case Quantico. There you will be given a TAD school seat to Pensacola. After you graduate you generally go back to the duty station you were TAD from. I've seen one or two cases where that has happened but its rare. Just talk to the jammer, the NCOIC at the air station (he's a really great guy and a good friend of mine), and the ATC monitor. (buy him a beer and he'll do whatever you want.) Between these three people you can get what you want/need.

Re: Anybody work at Quantico?
Posted: 03-11-2010, 08:38 PM Quote:
Currently, I'm stationed at MCAS Miramar, San Diego, CA as a 6113 CH53E flightline mech. Not Quantico. I am HMH-462 (currently...not sure right now if I'm perm or TAD until HMH-466 returns) and my jammer is Sgt Romero. I asked him a few times about contacting a monitor, and he says that to do so it would be a "second incentive" and doesn't seem to be too willing to help on contacting the monitor for my case. And the jammer seems to be about the only contact I have for making what I want to happen actually fall into play. Is there any way I could send you and the MCAS NCOIC a beer from across the country to help in my case? I'm really wanting to get Quantico after my schooling in Pensacola. Also, once resolved, I'd like to ask just a few basic questions about MOS School for ATC in Pensacola since, as an instructor, you probably have a good tid-bit of knowledge about what my experience will be. Thanks, again, in advance. |

Re: Anybody work at Quantico?
Posted: 03-12-2010, 12:06 AM evasive-If this is your first re-enlistment then you get duty station preference. Put quantico on there for that and make sure its included in your lat move package. I'm more than willing to entertain any questions you have about the school house or our MOS. I'm at Pendleton now working for MCIWEST. Also you don't need to buy the Quantico NCOIC a beer but the monitor. Oddly enough we have a leadership forum at Miramar the week after next and he will be there. I'll talk to him about your options and see what can possibly happen. By no means can i say for sure what will happen but i'll find out possibilities.

Re: Anybody work at Quantico?
Posted: 03-12-2010, 01:11 AM SSgt, I can't thank you enough for your help.
The way the jammer was explaining it was that I had the option to lat move OR choose my station preference. Not both. A good friend of mine went from 03xx to being a 6113 via lat move reenlistment and got the station preference and lat move he wanted. It kinda makes me wonder if maybe my jammer doesn't know what he's talking about, or maybe just isn't fully informed. Obviously, I haven't seen the paperwork, yet, but what can I do to ensure that all that I can do (IE my paper work, etc) is filled out correctly for the lat move to Quantico? Should I consider speaking with a different CRS? I hate to go over the head of an NCO, but if I can get what I want "legally" by doing so, then I can't say I feel guilty considering this involves not only me and the next few years of my life, but my wife and child as well. If you or the monitor would like to speak with me either in person on your venture to Miramar or on the phone, I live about 15minutes south of Miramar, kind of close to Sea World, and I work days. I'll be available at any time if I'm needed. Upon request I can send you a PM with my phone number. Your help is truly appreciated. As far as the MOS school goes and the MOS itself, I was curious how difficult and challenging the course is, as well as what to expect of the program (IE OJT, classroom, homework, weekends, etc). I also was curious as to what are my options within the MOS (IE Approach, ground, etc) and when would I know which I would be elected for. I'm hoping any further questions will be answered next week when I'll be trying to get a pass to go up in the tower for a few hours and ask questions and see what goes on to make one final check that this is where I want to go with my career; though I'm quite certain it is. Thanks, again, for everything. |

Re: Anybody work at Quantico?
Posted: 03-31-2010, 06:44 PM If NYG aka Quantico doesn't pan out, Just a few miles NE is DAA aka Davison Army Airfield (where I work), Quantico has a very small amount of civilian tower controllers. I know a few people at DAA are trying to jump ship for other DOD or FAA positions so there may be a few openings this year. Any questions feel free to message me.
