Do I need a car for transportation at the academy?
Posted: 01-20-2010, 06:35 PM

I'm a CTI that is gonna graduate next fall and I'm just curious what students at the academy do to get to and from places (their apartment, the academy, restaurants, etc). I'm thinking of possibly driving up there so I have a car. What do you academy students do? Mass transportation? Thanks in advance for your replies.

most of the places on the FAA housing list provide transportation(in the form of a bus) to and from your housing. Some places also offer a smaller room and rental car for a price equal to what the FAA pays you for housing. Others make friends with people in class and catch rides every day.

A car isnt a must, but it is definitely nice. Plus they will pay you travel for driving there and back.

Several of the lodging providers, such as Isola Bella, have courtesy cars available for students who don't bring their own car. These are available at no cost (except gas) to run local errands, etc. Note, you will need to show proof of full coverage auto insurance. Also there is a fair amount of ride sharing on weekends for those who want to escape over the weekend and on the numerous federal holidays.
OKC is the pits for mass transit. They think the mass in mass transit stands for Massachusets. If you are watching your pennies, leave your car at home and use what is available that is free.

Cheers,

To be honest having your car with you enables you to go escape the grind and get out and sightsee and go out and have some fun. Each time I went down to the academy I either took my car or rented one, but I often still rode the bus to and from the academy.

You can def. get around without a car...but I wouldn't want to be without one.

Bring your car, you will thank me. Something as simple as going to a movie on the weekend can help you keep your sanity.
