    Re: Women in ATC

The worst environment I've been in was a tower cab full of women. They were brutal to each other and pretty vindictive. On a different note, I helped train and supervise a young lady back in the day. A few years later we met up again during a deployment in Iraq. She made me so proud because she had become a real solid controller. Some dudes were scared to work traffic, but she always stepped up and definitely earned my trust as the crew watch supervisor.

No doubt it can be difficult for women in this job. Controllers are usually harsh and critical due to the nature of the job. It is definitely a two-way street though. Trainers need to try to be openminded, making sure to always keep it professional and treat the person with respect. Ladies, be willing to accept criticism and correction, and please do not expect special treatment. Just my two cents based on dealing with women training in ATC.

The whole black white thing is so old in atc. I think there are two things:

    Ability to work traffic
And ability to mesh socially in the work place.

A black guy can hit both those easily... So color is an afterthought.

Now a chick on the otherhand!!!! (Jokes)

Won't help you get in, but will help you get promoted to management.

I've never used the gender card to my advantage and wouldn't start with ATC, and I am certainly not the gossipy type. All I'm saying is that the best work environment for everyone is a professional one, where each employee is treated equally regardless of their gender: equal training, equal opportunity, and equal respectful treatment from our colleagues and superiors. And of course, we would all be held to the same standard and not given any type of advantage or disadvantage due to our gender. Although this is the ideal work environment, it is not always what happens. I hope that it can be close to this at the FAA.

Yea... no, I truly doubt women have it easier in the hiring process. Some people luck out and don't have to wait very long. You, like everybody else in the hiring process, will hope you are one of those lucky few.

My facility is pretty much split down the middle on the male to female ratio. It's nice to have that diversity. Everybody gets along rather well. I love it!

Oh, for God's sake, that's outrageous. If I make it to the interview and they tell me I'm in the back of the line because a guy whose race my race oppressed in what will be almost 6 decades ago has preference on that basis, I'd look them straight in the face and burst out laughing. I didn't do jack squat to anyone.

    Radium sums it up best.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the federal government adjusts their hiring to reflect equality in the workplace. Nowadays though you just don't see it nor hear about it. Everyone will get the call eventually, but you wont know if you took the back seat during selection process. It isn't anything to be bitter about.
