    Future FAA ATC Hiring?

    Hello
I am currently a sophmore at a college with multiple aviation schools, including a CTI program and am strongly thinking of changing my major to ATC. However with the 4 year degree my grad date wouldent be until late 2011/ 2012. Wondering if some people could shed light if hiring then will still be happening? I read many forums and yes the FAA says it will be through 2016 but is this for sure? looking for peoples opinions if its worth it? I also see alot of negativity toward issues of the 4 year CTI school but since I am already here and currently working toward my commercial pilot lisence..leaving is not really an option..plus I like it. So again will they still be hiring at apretty good clip in 2012, and will academy days way then be at decent times, I see now some people wait a year between applying and going to the academy.
    any info would be great

    Re: In the future...

Hiring will always be happening, just not necessarily at the madhouse rate that it has been.

The big jump in numbers is primarily due to the OTS announcements which have opened up. In the past, the bulk of new controllers were CTI or military transfers, but that hasn't been enough to meet the shortage -- so the floodgates have been opened, so to speak. It won't last forever, and it's already slowed down significantly compared to last year... but it'll still go on for a while.

Anyway, to you as a CTI student, it's not a big issue. You'll still be in demand in 2011-2012.
    Pan pan?

    had some additional questions..
    1. Is it true when you apply that you select two states, or is there really an option to put anywhere in US? Also filling in the notes section additional states, would that really work?
    2. For whatver reason and I am sure its happened what happens for CTI grads who are not selected for whatever states they choose? are they screwed? or have to re apply?
    3. Summer FAA ATCTI internships? are they worth it? hard to get? anyone know info on those? I would have a feeling that would be a great way to get your foot in the door with FAA,

I learned during my interview that they actually kept way more people than they were expecting after the economy hit the crapper and a bunch of people lost their asses. Once things settle down and those people finally go they'll have to bring in a ton of people quickly.

    1) Yes Yes Maybe
About a year ago they started adding a geographical preference section to the initial application where you can list 10 locations (city specific, state specific, or the whole darn country) This was thought not to be used, but I can attest first hand that they do look at the options on the original application. The primary way the FAA collects the geo prefs has been by email. After you complete the ATSAT and receive a qualifying score you will receive an email where you may choose 2 states and put comments in a box. Some may argue that not everyone who receives a qualified score receives a geo pref email and others will argue what you can and should but in that box. As there is great debate over the forums I leave you to do some research on those. I have also been told that CTI applicants do not get the geo pref emails anymore and they are strictly using the preference section from the application.

    2) Candidates may be selected for states outside their geo prefs. In this case they may choose to accept the location or turn it down and reapply. If a candidate is not selected at all they would need to reapply.

    3) Dunno, ask boss. (Hey Boss where you at?)

    01.10.09~ AT-SAT (Covina,CA) 96.2
