Is this last minute notice for class dates normal? And does anyone know a way I can get out of my lease so I won't be paying for rent while I'm in OKC? LOL
I have the same situation. My lease is up Feb 1st. I know Its asking a lot, but I am going to shoot the new HR person an email. I know me even having this job depends on the MMPI results, but I wonder if I can be fast-tracked through MMPI? LOL. I just need to know. Do I live in a Hotel pending a class date or renew my lease and get on with my life and look for another job? What a quandary!

Seems like lots of people have lease concerns. Have you guys tried talking to your landlords? If you're a good tenant they might allow you to go month to month when your lease expires. In my experience most places charge slightly more per month to do it this way, but they'll usually allow it. If you explain the job situation and that you can't re-sign another full years lease they may allow you to rent from them monthly. Usually a 30 day notice is required when you leave, but that's about it.

What about subleasing? My apartment management will do the requisite credit check + application processing for the individual, I just have to find them myself. If you are in a desirable location it is usually pretty easy to find someone interested.

It's also quite easy to find someone that will destroy your apartment and the repairs will all be on you. Also, if they default on rent payment, it's on you. Subleasing is dangerous but can definately work. Just make sure it is the RIGHT person.

Agreed. Like any legally binding agreement, know your rights/obligations beforehand. It can be a viable option as long as you understand the fine print.

I don't think I've signed a lease that didn't specifically say "no subleasing"

Go month-to-month if your landlord will let you. In a number of states, that's what happens by default when you reach the end of your lease term. I think it'd be a lot less hassle to do that rather than finding a subletter who won't wreck your place.

I will probably eventually end up signing a three month lease. I called the leasing office and they told me that I could be able to negotiate a lease for certain length but at a premium rate. I want to have the rate in writing. Going month to month means that my rate could go from 1100-1500 (I live in Chicagoland) and there isn't anything I can do about it. I am big on "in writing". This reminds me...if I make to OKC, and eventually to ZAU, I need to buy house. I was going to wait but the housing market, believe it or not, is CHEAPER than the rental market. I make good money now, so if I have to go back to the field I am in now (this job is recession/depression proof because no one in their right mind would do it), I could still afford it to make the payments.

Buying a house before November is a great idea if you can afford it and you're a first time home buyer.

There is currently an $8,000 tax credit for new home buyers and that money can either be applied to your closing costs or refunded to you at tax time. It's an amazing deal. I wish I was in a position to take advantage of it.

Theres talk of it coming back next year, but I wouldn't count on it. Bernanke announced the other day that the recession is over.
