Washington Center - ZDC
Posted: 02-10-2009, 08:34 PM I recently accepted a position at Washington Center... I was just wondering if anyone has any information about this place, good, bad or indifferent... Also if anyone has any information academy success numbers, as well as training successes, specifically for ZDC or another large center....
I have been involved in aviation for several years and completed 2 years of a CTI program before going into my current career, just looking to see how others have done... Thanks in advance... |

Re: Washington Center
Posted: 02-16-2009, 12:35 AM I was offered a position at ZNY and did my interview at ZDC. They gave me a tour and what not. It looks like a pretty nice place. The facility impressed me enough, anyway. The area, though? Eh. Lets just say that I'm not so impressed with Virginia. (I got a traffic ticket for no other reason than using a RADAR detector. No speeding... Nothing.) Leesburg and the facility are REALLY close to the borders of DC.
I dunno... Any more specific questions I might be able to answer? Or fail to answer. |

Re: Washington Center
Posted: 02-17-2009, 12:22 AM First let me say welcome to ZDC. I've been here since finishing OKC in Feb '07 and will say that ZDC has it share of the good and the bad.
The building itself is one of the older facilities and has pretty much been in a state of constant construction since I've been here. But once you adapt and figure out how to get around the temporarily closed hallways, or find the open restrooms for that particular week, it isn't so bad. ![]() We are divided into seven different areas, all of which have their fair share of developmentals at this time. For the most part, it is taking about one to one and a half years from the time you enter the building to the time you finish your D sides and begin your R side training. From there it is very much dependent on how you do on your R sides as to how long it takes to finish. And while I know of a few that did not succeed at ZDC, with one exception, they were all moved to lower level facilities. ZDC is a level 12 facility with good reason. As for the area itself you will want to be aware, as noted by DutchFSU, that Northern VA and the Leesburg area are pretty strict about traffic violations - speeding, radar detectors, etc... I grew up in the area and only ever had trouble in VA. But because of its location, ZDC controllers are spread out over VA, MD, WV and even PA. It all depends on how far you want to commute. Hope that answers some of your questions, but feel free to ask if there is anything else. ![]() |
