    Artcc/tracon sector assistant

Hi! Very proud to be here with all of you. Another important question I have is if the controller of one particular sector of an ARTCC or TRACON work alone or is assisted by another controller. Here on my work environment, after asuming a sector, I´ll have all time long the assistance of another controller.
Supposing that the answer will be NO ASSISTANT AT ALL, then How telephone calls for ATC Coordinations that impacts that particular sector are handled? Thank you!

i work at a large tracon and we work it by ourselves. all coordination is done by us. occasionally if it's really busy (with weather or emergencies maybe) we'll have a coordinator. and it seems to be that way in most terminal facilities. in the center's (ARTCC) they usually have a D-side which handles the coordination.

handoffs or assists are only staffed at my facility when the controller asks for it, the supervisor deems it, or we have 8 people on break...

99% of the time you work it by yourself.

One thing that reduces the need for an assistant is facility automation. A lot of the manual coordination of the past is accomplished with some level of automated system now. This allows a controller to do a lot on his own without an actual assistant. Each facility will be a little different as to when or if an assistant will sit down next to the controller. In some cases it will be always and in other cases, it will be during heavy traffic periods or for training only.

It varies by traffic. In my area there is always one D-side, could be at any sector and they move around as needed. If it gets busy, or the Sup deems it necessary they can add a D-side to any other sector. There are 5 sectors in my area. At lot of things that used to require calls in the center no longer do, whether it be through data block coordination or AIT procedures. It has decreased the workload somewhat, but plenty of stuff still needs to be done over landlines as well.

When the D-side is just there because they are required(IE: not traffic or work load related) they rarely do anything, the R-side will do all cordination themselves...the D-sides are usually wheeled across the area talking to other people lol.
