Portland Tower/TRACON - PWM
Posted: 08-13-2010, 10:06 AM I am thinking about bidding on this announcement to PWM. I am from CT and I am trying to get back to New England. I know a little bit about the area due to the fact that my uncle lived in Scarborough for over 30 years and we would visit Maine 1-2 times a year. Any information about the facility or local area would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: KPWM - FAA Portland ATCT/TRACON?
Posted: 08-14-2010, 09:23 PM I worked at PWM in the airport admin for almost a year a couple years ago. I lived in scarborough and south portland. There are, im sure, others on here who can give more information about the facility and operation but ill give it a shot.
PWM has two runways with a descent mix of GA and Air Carrier operations. They have about 14-15 gates if i remember correctly with a fleet that ranges within the regional aircraft category. There is a pretty descent sized FBO ramp north of the tower that is pretty busy during the summer. All the rich folks from southern new england send their kids to camp in ME and then fly up during the weekends to see them. If they havent started yet, they will be starting soon a pretty nice sized expansion project that calls from a handful more gates and another large FBO. Portland is a pretty cool city. When i moved there i was expecting something more along the size of Boston but it is considerably smaller in geographical area and skyline. Most buildings in the Old Port are old renovated warehouses and arent much higher than 4 or 5 stories; but that gives the city character. Also lends itself nicely to small mom and pop type shops and restaurants. Not too much on the order of chain types downtown, have to go to The Maine Mall for that. There are a lot of outdoorsy things to do there. The fall is absolutely gorgeous with the changing leaves. Winters can be brutal with blizzards reaching into April at least. I could go on and on about the area but ill save that for another time or when requested. Hope you get it. I know they have a bid out now for CPCs so they are, at least, in need. |
