Miami Tower/TRACON - MIA
Posted: 06-25-2008, 03:59 PM

Is there anyone here that is either at, or going to MIA Tower? I have just been given an offer there, and was wondering what everyones thoughts are. Thanks for any advice!

I wonder if they're going to split MIA into separate areas like they have Potomac, since they're consolidating Palm Beach International in there.

When I visited MIA, they had 15 operational scopes according to our guide. There were 3 in the corner that were reserved for PBI, making a total of 18. That's a heck of a lot of scopes for one person to train on. I'm not saying it's impossible, but that's a long way to go to certification.

Maybe it'd make sense to split the facility into two areas of 9 scopes each. Kind of how Potomac has one area for Dulles, one for Baltimore, etc. There could be a North area and a South area. The North side would handle FLL, PBI, and all the satellite airports north of FLL (like FL Exec, Boca Raton, and Pompano). The South would work MIA and all of the satellite fields south of FLL (like Homestead ARB, Tamiami, Opa Locka, and North Perry).

Then again, the most sensible thing would be to just leave PBI's TRACON where it is.... As a veteran of many hurricanes (Andrew, Katrina, Wilma, Jeanne, etc.) a little redundancy can go a heck of a long way. PBI and MIA as they are right now serve as "backup generators" for each other, as they're spaced far enough apart that a single hurricane won't hit both of them hard unless it pulls a Hurricane Hugo and just rides the coastline.

The whole Miami area is one big political mess right now. Check out http://www.faahope.com/ for information about what is going on in that area of the NAS.

I work at miami center. There has been talk of spliting the tower and tracon at mia since i got here. there is also talk of bringing palm beach approach down here as well... haven't heard any new news in a while... miami is nice but the housing market is absurd
