RNO
Posted: 03-03-2009, 04:35 PM I'm almost done with the interview/clearance process now for a tower position at RNO and I was just wondering if anybody out here can clear up some of the rumors I've read...
I know that the FAA is investigating splitting the tracon off and/or handing it over to norcal, I've also read that they are looking into closing the tower at night. They've got a new tower scheduled to open in late 2009/early 2010, I know a lot of things the FAA does don't make sense, but would they really build a new up/down facility only to hand off the tracon to another location? Also, would closing the tower at night affect the facility level? |

Re: Reno Tower?
Posted: 03-14-2009, 11:47 AM Wow, did I phrase my questions wrong last week? I got no responses...
FYI - I don't know if this means anything, but my HR contact told me that he has 5 positions at RNO to fill this fiscal year, so anyone with that designation will get a training date shortly after they get their clearances. |

Re: Reno Tower - RNO
Posted: 05-01-2009, 02:44 PM I talked with the Reno facility manager and the Regional Director yesterday and NORCAL is taking over Reno's approach after the new tower is finished. The new tower is just a tower, no Tracon. They also hinted that the newer guys will be shipped out to NORCAL. Exact words were "persuaded to go". That would only be if enough people didn't volunteer to go. They didn't say it would close at night. I will be there is a few months and I REALLY don't want to go to California. But, Reno's manager seems cool.

Re: Reno Tower - RNO
Posted: 03-11-2010, 07:12 PM In answer to some of your questions, RNO's TRACON will be moving to NCT. But as of right now, nobody knows when. If NCT has to wait the required one year from when they submit an Article 7, then you're looking at next Feb. Word on the street is if the FAA wants the TRACON to move to NCT by the end of October of 2010, then they are going to have to offer NATCA a deal. Such as, move money and other stuff. "Stuff" is all specualtion, and it might only be move money, so who knows.
As for the Tower, no way the FAA can shut it down at night. There are air carriers that fly in between 2 - 5 in the morning. Not many, but there are some and one would think that is enough for someone to not want the liability of something bad happening. Per the white book, if you are at RNO before the move to NCT is made, you will keep your level 8 status pay. (Kind of the same thing that went down at Lincoln, Nebraska) For those that are worried about being "persuaded to go", dont worry. If you want to stay, you stay. They cant force you to go, UNLESS they say they need X amount of controllers to go and not enough sign up. BUT, I really doubt that will happen. Thats all I have. |
